I sometimes leave my beater pipes in the garage for a few days with the last smokes ash in the bowl. I had a thought that it might make the taste go sour faster or something along those lines. Any discussion on this topic?

My "good" pipes get dumped and swabbed immediately after a smoke. If I'm smoking in the car they sit until I'm parked.

I clean my pipes chamber thoroughly after each smoke. I dump the ash, roll up a half sheet of paper towel and ream the bowl clean. Cleans any dottle at the bottom of the bowl as well. This way my next smoke will be much more enjoyable........YMMV. Just a personal preference.

I often leave ash in the bowl for as much as 24 hours. Though I have never noticed any ill effect I don’t recommend doing this. Somehow it seems that cleaning the chamber and airway immediately after smoking would be best. Sometimes I just forget.

I can't vote twice. Sometimes I dump immediately, sometimes I forget, and find it DAYS later...

Quick emptying promotes drying, imo and that's what I do.

I always clean my pipe after using...like within 5 minutes or sooner. Just like to have a clean pipe and I have all the time in the world so...why not.

Reaaaally depends on the pipe. My MM beaters? Until I smoke it again. My Savs? Immediately.

I pretty much dump immediately, and then remove the stem from the shank; clean out the mortise and air draft channel with a thick pipe cleaner; the stem gets a regular pipe cleaner run through it; reassemble the stem to shank and run a clean regular pipe cleaner in through the bit to the bottom of the bowl; there is usually about a 1/2" or so sticking out from the bit which I bend upwards, and then sit the pipe up on my rack or leather pipe holder to cool off. Depending on what the exterior of the stem looks like, I may wipe it off, apply some oil/wax, and then rub it buff it off prior to sitting it on the rack/leather pipe holder

I dump the ashes and dottle, run a pipe cleaner through the stem, and swab out the bowl immediately after each smoke.

Immediately, and run pipe cleaners thru also immediately. Never swab the bowl.

Since only smoke straight Virginias I don't have much if any dottle left in the bowl, just loose grey ash. I dump it out and take and blow through the stem then put a cleaner in the pipe for about 30 mins or so then take it out and into the rack it goes. been doing it this way for almost 50 years now and it works for me !

I believe in dumping the ash and running a pipe cleaner through the stem after each smoke. Being the lazy slob I am I usually end up with an ashtray full of dirty pipes in about a week. My heart is in the right place even if the thought is not followed by the deed. Always ready to offer advise to others of a more aggressive bent.

My house pipes are always emptied, wiped and get a pipe cleaned run through after smoking. My garage and work truck pipes on the other hand get emptied out when I want to have a smoke again. They get rotated out every week and get a good cleaning though.

I'm an immediate kinda guy. I throw my pipes in a drawer when I'm done so I don't want ash all over the drawer.

Like some others I try to dump it immediately but often I forget for a day or two.
Just last night I realized that I had the previous three days of pipes sitting on a shelf and I hadn't dumped or cleaned any of them.. I use one pipe a day and when I get home from work I usually drop it on a shelf inside the door. I've been working a lot of ot and have been generally busy/exhausted these last few weeks so these three pipes had just slipped my mind. No big deal though.. I just took em outside, dumped them, took a few pipe cleaners to each of them, and set them back in a rack. They'll be fine, I'm sure.

It appears I need to start dumping ash out of my beaters ASAP. Thanks for playing everyone.

I like to let my pipe cool for a good 10-20 minutes or so. I'll be honest, I fall asleep often. I'm old. With cool ash in the bowl, of course. I'd just rather take in those much needed ten or fifteen minutes than toil with some smelly old pipe. I try to relegate duty between pipes for english blends, and pipes for aromatics, and so forth. Ghosting is not a concern

Usually dump it when done, never have swabbed a bowl & use a pipe cleaner when needed or when I remember.

I'll usually wait 15-20 min till my pipe cools. Then dump, and do a thorough cleaning.

Is credibility an issue here? Just sayin' I have some doubts about some of the claims. I wait 'til I want to smoke that pipe again and only clean it when it smokes wet, or tastes funky.

I clean immediately after every smoke (after it cools). If I'm done with the pipe for the day, I run a pipe cleaner through stem and shank and leave overnight to absorb any excess moisture, then remove and let air dry.

I used to leave for indefinitely but have found dumping sooner results in a sweet smoke.
