I close the bowl with my thumb and shake the ash to coat the bowl. That technique is a big help in forming a nice cake. Learned this trick from Clarence Mickels.

I shake the ash too, but use a cork knocker over the top instead of my thumb.

This hits me as a very strange question, maybe its because I'm such a anal perfectionist with OCD. I have to dump mine the minute I'm done and run a cleaner through it. Now mind you sometimes I don't finish a bowl in one sitting but, when its done its dump and cleaner.

Smoking mostly meerschaum I try not to let any ash build up. I dump my bowl, use a bristle cleaner through the stem and then a light scrub on the bowl, followed by a normal pipe cleaner. Probably overkill, but I really avoid sour smokes and cake build up this way

And I wouldn't suggest using one in any pipe that often. If you've ever seen what the wire of a standard cleaner can do just by bumping the inside of a chamber after time you'll know what I mean. I've seen holes virtually drilled into the chamber by one and out the other side.

I won't argue with your self examination.... The reason I asked it was because I found myself leaving my workshop pipes and forgetting to come back to them. Sometimes it was dang near a full bowl of tobacco and other times varying degrees of tobacco & ash or straight ash. I would keep on smoking if there looked to be half a bowl or more left, otherwise I would dump and reload. Sometimes it may be a day or a week before I picked up that pipe again and I never thought it smoked any different. Since this poll I have tried to dump afterwards but I still forget. I have always smoked stuff in the workshop that is easy to get. That way if I ever feel I am dumping good tobacco it isn't Stonehaven or the like.

I prefer to dump and clean immediately, but lately I have been lax.

Anywhere from 5 seconds to a minute.
And I always remove all the ash before reloading, unless inconvenient. I hate the idea of smoking ash, and it makes for a crumby and crumbly cake.

You're probably right, I do the scrub pretty gently but it is likely too much.

I dump the ashes immediately, they stink hanging around. Added to my mulch.

I'm too old and would forget to clean it out later, so I do it immediately

Works best for me, I also clean the chamber after each smoke.

I knock everything out and run cleaner just past draft hole. I take care not to scrape or injure cake.If chamber needs scraping I wait a few days until cake has dried.
