Im currently making an order with pipesandcigars and I have some dark fired Kentucky burley on the basket. Most reviews Ive read say they use it for blending, but some use it by itself, noting it is stronger, but still nice. Im looking to move away from aromatics, and as a many-generation Kentuckian, I think I want to experience a little of what my great-great Grandpappy might have experienced. Any feedback on this?

I love DFK! While it can certainly be smoked straight, it's a bit one dimensional that way. It's best used, IMHO, to add some boldness, depth and character to blends that are lacking it. Adding some to your favorite Va's, Va/Per's or mild Burley blends would be a good way to experiment. PS β¦ pressing the tobacco and jarring for a few months will really enhance your home-made blends. Good luck and let us know what you think!

Well, for DFK, IMO the absolutely best blend available is MacB HH Old Dark Fired bar none.

Definitely agree w slowroll. Dark Fired KY is usually used in blends and ODF is a great one. Another one I love is Heinrichs Dark Strong Flake.
KY tobacco is also used in cigars and brings a smoky flavor, like another take on Latakia. Kentucky Fire Cured from Drew Estate is a good example. Also, Italian dry cured cigars (e.g. Toscano Antico) use it - they love it so much in cigars, their premium sticks are made with KY imported from KY and for their regular sticks they use KY style tobacco grown in Italy.

OK. I also ordered some of the MacB HH Old Dark Fired. I ordered 2 oz of the HH to try it, and 4 oz of the bulk DFK. If it's too strong, I know I can use it as a blending, so it wont be wasted.
Im always trying to move toward the simple and old ways. We will see.

As a fellow Kentuckian, I was a pallbearer at my great-grandfather's funeral simply because they took the youngest and strongest of us there for the task. I was 24, he as 97. He carried a tin of Prince Albert, a cob and a pack of rolling papers in his overalls - That's the real experience if you really want it.
By chance, out of all his kin, I ended up with his .32-20 pistol, whistle and cavalry insignia he carried in WWI. The pistol looks like hell to the naked eye but is in better shape than most, still functional and recently appraised at $1,600.

Just beginning a tour into non-aromatics and looking to sample some Kentucky? I would try Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky and pick up Orlik's Golden Sliced along the way. I would buy a minimum of two tins each. Try each blend and if it does not strike your fancy, jar the open tin (sample every 6 months or so) and keep the unopened tin in the cellar for a few years (to many palates, this time frame represents the most noticeable flavor change for the time aged.). The Virginia tobaccos evolve nicely. The two experiences will help you discern what aging can do to Virginia tobaccos in purer and mixed (Dark fired Kentucky) blends for future reference.

I used to smoke a lot more aros too, no crime as I still like them on occasion. Mac Baren Vanilla Cream is still a regular in my rotation. I would suggest some of the following based upon availability and price:
Uhle's Burleys rock. 00 and Perfection plug top my list. #300 is a little sweeter and actually my favorite of the three.
Orlik Golden Slice is affordable and a good easy smoke.
Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired may be what you're chasing if you want a deeper and richer smoke.
Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake is an equally full flavored satisfying smoke when you can find it although I personally prefer their Best Brown Flake.
Those are just some ideas. It's a long journey and your palate will lead the way.

I got my order in today of Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired and bulk Dark Fired Kentucky Burley. I chose the bulk Dark Fired first, loaded up a bowl in my JM Boswell, and lit it up. First, for reference, Ive been smoking mild aromatics for years, currently it's been Lane LTD BCA. That's my reference point.
When I unpacked these two bags from the mail, I was immediately transported to my granddad's old tobacco barn in the hills of Kentucky I used to play in as a kid. I loved the pouch smell so much more than the stuff I've been used to. It was real, earthy. Home.
I lit the pipe, but told my wife before I did that I was ready to go outside if she found it harsh or unpleasant at all. My 17 year old son said the room note reminded him of a tack room full of saddles and a wood stove in an old barn (for us, that's a very high compliment) He loved it. My wife said it was like the kitchen in a cozy old farmhouse. She said she liked it much more than the aromatics, and she likes the aromatics. She said to her it smells natural and "right". Natural. Not sweet and artificial.
Smoking it is altogether a different experience than I'm used to. It's like spending years drinking cappuccinos with cream and sugar, and then switching to strong, black cowboy coffee. You realize you've never really tasted the coffee before, and you actually like it. It is certainly stronger, I slowed down a bit, smoked it much more leisurely. It has more of a nicotine hit, and there was more saliva. And the beard note is completely unexpectedly ... sweet? I dont know, but I really, really like it.

You are exactly right about PA being the smoke of choice among the older generation of Kentuckians, at least in Eastern Kentucky where I was born and raised. My grandfather smoked it and my father. I am 69 years old and I still smoke it regularly. As a side note, I too inherited my father's 32-20 pistol. I don't know whether my grandfather ever owned it or not.

Hi Dewayne, I'm Duane, also Kentuckian. ODF is good as is Bold Kentucky. I like Stokkebye's Dark Fired by itself, and also like to smoke it mixed 50/50 with Stokkebye's Oriental.

MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired is one of my top 3 tobaccos. I buy the 1 pound bags of flakes. I prefer the flake over rubbed. The flakes age superbly. It is also a great smoke without aging.
