I decided to post here, because it looks like the general discussion option has evaporated....If it was mentioned, I missed it...I like kicking around antique shops anyway as a hobby.Saw this cabinet today with the graduated drawers, it would be really cool to repurpose it with tobacco blends or pipes, but for $1,900.00 that is a non starter. All of these are in very good condition, but at $35 apiece is overpriced, and they are all about 40 slots too short for what I was looking for....it amazes me what people think some things are worth. When I was in the meat business, an old butcher had one of these foot treadle grinding wheels, he was able to get an edge like no other...everyone took their knives to him. Saw this at the consignment shop when we went to pick up my wife's check for product that moved....I threw it in here, because I thought that it might make a great outdoor smoking table or small bar set up for people on a budget.

My mom was the one who introduced me to the antique market when I was a kid. I have to admit, it never gets old.๐

Years ago, before I came back to pipe smoking, I went to a government auction at the USGS facility in Menlo Park, they had an antique solid wood drawer-ed unit for map storage, and it had some pretty nice cabinets on that unit that had sliding holders that would be perfect for tins. And it went really cheap.

Charlie, youโd be surprised at some of the items Iโve purchased cheap at yard/garage sales. The trick is if the first day of the sale starts at 9:00am on a Saturday, Iโd get there around 8:30am and usually had first pick. A few years ago I purchased a Charatan pipe with an 18kt band for $10.00. I even told the seller it was 18kt gold and I still remember him saying..,.โ yeah right, on a pipe โ! So, I got a deal๐๐๐

Not me. I have gotten some amazing deals, after you get $10 deals on a first year Tanshell, and And BBB Straight grain, 1940 Peterson, etc all for $10....there are deals to be had, you just have to be persistent and ask questions. I would try yard sales, but I think that they would be labor intensive to find a pipe at...it is always good to ask at a yard sale though, I know a guy that went to a yard sale near Kansas City and asked the guy if the guy had any weapons...The guy had never thought about bringing them out for sale...my friend walked away with about 15K worth of firearms with provenance for 1K. And that was without taking advantage of the guy, they were his WW1, and WW2 veteran grandfather's and never wanted them, had no use for them...the guys grandfather was instrumental in starting the American Legion..pretty famous.

Thanks for sharing. We had a rougher foot pedaled wheel stone. Used it on our axes and garden tools to keep an ok edge. Wish I still had it.

I did pick up a trade publication put out by Mack truck specifically for the Lumber industry...no date on it, but I figure 1930ish...them guys had some stones with what they drove back then...chain drive axles, most had hard rubber tires, no suspension system....the book is filled with a lot of information and insight that I was unaware of...52 pages of goodness. Them guys would think they met Flash Gordon if they could be in a modern cab. I am going to check in at our Mack dealership and show the general manager...He will have to buy me a nice steak dinner and drinks to get it out of my paws, I paid $5 for it.

Try hand cranking one of those monsters that are on the road today. Or even the old monsters!....I thought the same thing. Having had both shoulders operated on, these things are noticed.

trailboss, that drawer cabinet looks brilliant. I'd love something like that for my pipes. However, like you, I couldn't justify the price. Still lovely to look at.

Yeah.. something like that would be nice to find at a steal price with no competing bidders...that stuff happens sometimes at a brick and mortar auction if they have no reserve price. You just have to have the time to attend the auctions, and go even when you donโt feel like it.
Back in the eighties, I went to storage unit auctions, one unit was full of brand new tires... only 3 of us bidders showed up that day, the other guy had more cash than me...that day I left my credit card at home to prevent me from making stupid choices.... that was a stupid choice.

Guilty of watching that show in the past, but as with any of the reality shows, it quickly becomes apparent that reality has nothing to do with what takes place.

My brother has an antique store and told me that none of the customers are young, as they don't want stuff that looks like their grandparents owned it. They would much rather have something modern looking from IKEA.

My brother has an antique store and told me that none of the customers are young, as they don't want stuff that looks like their grandparents owned it. They would much rather have something modern looking from IKEA. Sad but true... IKEA generally produces and sells expensive disposable garbage furniture, but people seem to like it. Why, I do not know. I'd sooner get vintage thrift shop furniture and refinish it - at least the furniture will last. I agree on the antique shop pricing. I have several massive antique shops and malls nearby. I often look for pipes and tobacciana while out and about. On a recent excursion, there was a rack of unidentifiable pipes - they appeared to be 1940's-ish as they had (badly faded) bakelite stems. No stamped nomenclature could be found, and all of the pipes were heavily used with thick cakes. The price? $16.00 each non-negotiable. A 4-pipe art deco metal pipe stand? $75.00. Empty vintage cigar boxes? $10.00. Honestly, I think items are priced to grab the person that walks by and thinks that they must have that specific item. Otherwise, the antique pricing I have seen has no bearing on actual market value at all. Market pricing is pretty easily determined by eBay "completed" auction as-sold prices.
