Good afternoon guys,
Thought I would ask you for your help defining the pipes used between 1550ad and 1625ad. I am also wondering about the tobaccos they smoked in this time period.
Thanks for your help

The majority of pipes smoked at that time were most likely clays. As for the tobacco, that's an interesting question. I doubt much blending as we know it was being done. So, raw Burley's and Virginias are most likely. There are sites that offer what they call traditional native American smoking blends intended for ceremonies but they look more like herbal concoctions. I'd say when in doubt go with Prince Albert but Samuel Gawith's history goes back to the late 18th century so that tells us that some serious thought was given to the weed over the previous 100 years. Some research into the Dutch style tobaccos of the 17th century may yield what you're looking for.
