Hi! I am new to pipe smoking. I have been smoking for a little over a month. I can't really explain WHY I decided to pick up a pipe, but it did have a little to do with heritage. The avatar I am using is my great-great-great-grandmother, who is my namesake. That's how I inherited the picture She's infamously known in the family as "The Lady with the Pipe." I don't know how common it was in the mid-1800s for a woman to smoke a pipe, but her picture makes me think she was someone who kind of did her own thing. I guess I kind of want to be like her. I figure if we share a name we might as well be sisters of the pipe!
So, in October hubby and I were away for the weekend and I saw a corn cob pipe for sale and on a whim bought it. I got home and did some research, and bought some Carter Hall tobacco. I smoked two or three bowls of that, but hubby didn't really like the smell. I picked up some Captain Black. After some more research I found a tobacconist on the other side of town. I have picked up a few samples from there, and I attended their monthly pipe meeting the first Tuesday of November. Their next meeting will be next week and I'm really looking forward to it.
My first pipe was a Missouri Meerschaum Legend, straight, then I picked up a bent. Now I have bought a couple bent Diplomats, I like their shape much better.
I look forward to learning more and getting to know you all.

Welcome to the forum. It's nice to see that you're following your legacy. Good choice of first pipes, by the way. Cobs are very durable and great for trying new blends. Major props for going to pipe club meetings. Those sessions will accelerate your knowledge tremendously. Ask any questions you want. There's a lot of experience here and all are willing to share. Also keep us informed about your pipe journey. I look forward to hearing more from you.

thank you! it is very nice to be part of a pipe smoking community. the local tobacconist's emphasis really is on cigars. they have the largest in-store humidor in the tri-state area, which really suprised me because while I live in the capital city, it really isn't very big. They have a modest selection of pipes and tobacco. In fact, my first "tin" purchase was at that shop, I got the BriarWorks Peach Cobbler. I'm a sucker for peach. I do have to choose my selections carefully as hubby has a very sensitive nose and is rather picky about what fragrances are allowed in the house. So far Captain Black Cherry, the Peach Cobbler, CAO Black and Cult Blood Red Moon has been acceptable, lol. Hubby is a bit mystified as to why I have started pipe smoking, and he'd probably prefer I didn't, but as long as I don't smoke anything he deems obnoxious and I use filters (he is very health conscious) he won't raise an objection. He is interested in making pipes (he enjoys woodworking, in fact he is in his shop right now attempting to make me a new crochet hook for my birthday) even if he has no interest in smoking them.

Welcome, to the fold. There is many pipes to smoke. Pounds and pounds of tobacco to taste so pull up a chair and relax. Have a cool refreshing drink on hand and some to snack on.

We have a couple of ladies here. Scottie Piersel is one of them and she's an outstanding pipe maker. The site founder (sparks) has several of her Bing style pipes. I have one of her small Dublins. Great pipes from a great lady.

Now that's something I've never heard, a hubby complaining of the smell of his spouses pipe. I on the other hand smoke outside cause I don't like the smell in the house and I'm no hubby but, I'm a bit eccentric to say the least anyway.
