you know there really are no drawbacks unless you enjoy relighting your pipe. with a Kirsten Bowl once you learn how to pack it you light it once and it burns all the way to the bottom without relights. I have let my pipes sit 5 to 8 minutes at a time and come back to it and there is still in Amber smoking. What is the secret to packing a Kirsten? I usually have issues with the screw getting blocked and not being able to smoke until I get it cleaned of blockage. you start with the bowl off of the pipe. drop in a large pinch and pack it down literally as tight and hard as you can possibly pack it. then drop in more pinches packing each one tight (not as tight as the first) until you fill the bowl to 1/4 inch from the top. than you need a czec tool (or some type of poker that will fit through the bowl screw) gently push the poker up through the bottom of the screw be sure and have your fingers over the top of the bowl as you gently push the poker through the screw you will feel the plug of tobacco that you formed pop loose in the bowl once the plug pops loose push the poker all the way up through the tobacco. (the tobacco will now be level with the top of the bowl) what you have done is create airflow all around the plug of tobacco and up the center. screw the bowl back onto the pipe and Light. when I light the bowl I burned the top of it until the entire top is a cherry (which of course is too hot to smoke) then I let the bowl sit for about a minute and it will smoke perfectly all the way to the bottom without a relight 99.9% of the time lol this will also work on any type of removable Bowl aluminum pipe but when you pack a viking or falcon or like style pipe form the first initial pinch of tobacco with the bowl on the pipe because of the larger hole at the bottom so the tobacco doesn't push down into the hole

All of my pipes that use a removable bowl I pack in this manner ^^^^^^^^^ works great. Just a bit more patience but worth the effort 👍

a Kirsten style of pipe smokes cooler and drier then a briar pipe they literally clean in one minute and you never have to let them rest you can smoke them 10 times a day 365 days a year It's entirely possible to do that with a briar. I haven't switched pipes for several weeks.

Properly packed you can experience that with most pipes regardless of the material they are made of. More about technique than the pipe used.

I have both briar and meerschaum bowls for it. When I bought it at a junk shop, I sent photos to Stacey at Kirsten in Seattle and she identified it for me. Of the two other metal pipes I've owned - one a Falcon and I don't remember the brand on the other one - I gave both away because I didn't like them.

A friend once bragged of his Kirsten - "this pipe could smoke itself". Several years ago when I finally tried one...I understood what he meant...it smokes as easy, cool and dry as any pipe I've got.
Very nice looking metals, Doug.
