Well, I’ve been quiet here lately due to the fact I’ve been a bit preoccupied. My wife and I have decided we are going back to Texas for a spell, Dallas to be exact. We are about to have our first kid and we have a bit more support there. San Diego is great, just couldn’t make it work! We both dislike Dallas but its our best option at this time.
I was planning to go to the local B&M before leaving so I can finally have some baccy, and not have to order online, but that looks like a no go as our plans just got moved up. Getting on the road sometime tomorrow. Anyway kind of bummed about going back, but who’s to say what’s good or bad.
Just wanted to share, hope you all have a nice morning and a lovely day!

Sounds like you've thought this through.
I wish you well in your move. I hope you enjoy moving back and I hope that, in a very short space of time, you feel at peace that you've made the right move.

Charlie, people are leaving, but not for the reason you state. California has the 5th largest economy on the planet. Let me repeat that. California has THE 5TH LARGEST ECONOMY ON THE WHOLE, ENTIRE, PLANET EARTH. That doesn't happen because the state is "waging war on business". But, the state hasn't been prepared for the onslaught of people that were moving to it. Housing costs have risen sharply year after year as competition for housing has risen. Wages haven't kept up with cost of living increases. So people are leaving because the cost of living is simply too high, and the population density is putting a strain on resources. Put it bluntly, people are moving to where they hope they will have a better quality of life, and a better quality of life doesn't always equate to a fatter paycheck or a flashier car.

I dunno Jesse... I recently dropped trailers for companies that relocated in Arizona...all of them cited burdensome regulations, southern California traffic/ commuting distances for employees/ Housing costs causing them to look for greener pastures. By virtue of the massive population, existing infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, I know that they are an economic powerhouse, but the articles referenced has merit in what they say...a company that makes widgets can usually do so much cheaper elsewhere...and that doesn't necessarily translate to the worker getting shafted.
The company I work for, the numbers are incredibly higher to operate in California, even though the rank and file make the same wages. We are moving our service center from Kingman Arizona to Fort Mojave California to accomodate critical transit times, and the constant overbearing regulations had driven costs stratospherically, and brought everything to a grind.
Our delivery receipts for California related freight all has surcharges, that I do not see from other areas.

Low and Slow, good luck with your move. San Diego is a beautiful place to leave and sorry you have to do it, but fully understand why. You will like being near family. Nothing beats that. I lived in Dallas for a bit many years ago, and found it to be a really neat place. Cost of living is much lower than California. My wife had family in Fort Worth in those days, so family around makes all the difference.

Yep don't deny any of that and yet California's economy moved from 6th place in the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH to 5th place in the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH in 2018. Its economic output is now greater than the United Kingdom. Yes people complain. and I don't blame them. But the reason that California's economic ranking has continued to rise is because, despite all the complaints, assuming they're astute competent businessmen, they're making money and truckloads of it. Businesses are just having to share a larger slice of that pie with the state and businesses don't like that. Boo hoo. And frankly, I don't expect this state of affairs to continue. At some point the economy is going to tank and a lot of over leveraged business and individuals are going to face some serious pain. California is going to experience its share of pain as well. But a war on business? No. That's just propagandistic bilge put out by special interests looking for a free ride or an excuse for their own incompetence, one that is contradicted by the numbers.

Like I said, California has agricultural areas like none other, and silicon valley and the tech industry contribute to a huge part of the economy, and of course California is a destination choice for vacationers. Powerhouses like Apple and Google can pretty much weather any sort of regulation.
I never said anything about California's financial standing in the world, all I said is that many, many businesses that do not want to deal with the heavy regulations have moved out...and resultingly, there is a large exodus of people....on them facts they are irrefutable.
I was thinking about moving to Lonesome Dove... I was going to rent pigs there, but the locals regulated it out.
I got the impression that Joe was leaving with a heavy heart, and not wanting to end up in Dallas, but sometimes forces beyond our control sometimes dictate that we move on for the betterment of the family... it doesn’t mean failure on his part to make it work there.

Sorry it didn’t work out for you in CA, but I’d take TX any day over the glorified cesspool which is CA.
Actually, I love CA and might live there if not for the overcrowding, lunatic taxes, high cost of living, and the meteoric swing to extreme left.
Honestly thought CA was the 10th largest economy in the world, but it’s resting on the success of its past. This it’s bigger than Britain says more about Britain than CA.
All that being said, to the OP - May your move be smooth, congrats on the addition to your family, and I hope you can see the value in TX and not hate where you land.

I'd go to Dallas if Poncho's was still there... Poncho's is all over Houston and probably Dallas too. I just don't see the attraction, except for the sopapillas.

I wish you best, but I don't know anyone who likes Dallas. Having family there will make a difference. Texas is the 10th largest economy in the world, and growing too fast. All the Kalifornians moving here are changing the politics, and the cities are all just getting unmanageable. Plenty of open, but when people sell their cottage in LA for $5 million and buying a thousand acres in Texas there really isn't much available. Nothing here will ever be as beautiful as a place on the Pacific Coast, but we still have a lot of beautiful places.

It is a bit out of the way, but I thought I'd see a bit more of the country going that way. Unless it's not worth it? I didn't like the I10 I 8 route coming out here, I could be wrong but I dig a nice road trip. Any suggestions are welcome! I'd imagine you know a thing or two about traveling these roads😉

I was going to say, Panchos for me is a bit touchy food wise! Not sure I ever got to the sopapillas. Maybe I missed out... I know of some food gems around there though.

Most of my trucking has been California/ Arizona/ occasionally Utah... I try not to stray too far from the hacienda. I drove that way once driving a concert rig, but my part was at night and went to the bunk after that... from SoCal to Boston.
