It's the sopapillas... Well, gluttony too. I was going to say, Panchos for me is a bit touchy food wise! Not sure I ever got to the sopapillas. Maybe I missed out... I know of some food gems around there though. The only reason to go there is for the sopapillas. The rest of the "food" is worse than Jack's 2-for-a-dollar tacos.

I dunno Jesse... I recently dropped trailers for companies that relocated in Arizona...all of them cited burdensome regulations, southern California traffic/ commuting distances for employees/ Housing costs causing them to look for greener pastures. By virtue of the massive population, existing infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, I know that they are an economic powerhouse, but the articles referenced has merit in what they say...a company that makes widgets can usually do so much cheaper elsewhere...and that doesn't necessarily translate to the worker getting shafted. The company I work for, the numbers are incredibly higher to operate in California, even though the rank and file make the same wages. We are moving our service center from Kingman Arizona to Fort Mojave California to accomodate critical transit times, and the constant overbearing regulations had driven costs stratospherically, and brought everything to a grind. Our delivery receipts for California related freight all has surcharges, that I do not see from other areas. Yep don't deny any of that and yet California's economy moved from 6th place in the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH to 5th place in the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH in 2018. Its economic output is now greater than the United Kingdom. Yes people complain. and I don't blame them. But the reason that California's economic ranking has continued to rise is because, despite all the complaints, assuming they're astute competent businessmen, they're making money and truckloads of it. Businesses are just having to share a larger slice of that pie with the state and businesses don't like that. Boo hoo. And frankly, I don't expect this state of affairs to continue. At some point the economy is going to tank and a lot of over leveraged business and individuals are going to face some serious pain. California is going to experience its share of pain as well. But a war on business? No. That's just propagandistic bilge put out by special interests looking for a free ride or an excuse for their own incompetence, one that is contradicted by the numbers. I agree with you, sablebrush52, as I was born in CA and have been observing the atmosphere for many years. It is as you say.

No, that's the cost of a bathroom remodel.
Them ain't facts, Charlie. Maybe wishful thinking. California is still generating a lot of jobs. Texas is presently #1 in that regard, I believe. And it will soon become Californicated. The high cost of living in LaLa Land is causing many to rethink staying there, which is a sign of intelligent life on planet earth. Personally I think that shrinkage is going to be beneficial in the long run. Once I retire I'm out of here as well. I got the best of it growing up when I did, and if I didn't need to be here to do the work that I do I would have left long ago. I won't much miss the crowds of lemmings spending half their lives sitting in rush hour traffic.
To the OP, I wish you and your new addition to the family all good fortune!

Good luck on the move, amigo.
If you ever come up to Oklahoma, shoot me a PM. I'll take you to the local B&M.
Congrats on the baby, too. If your experience is at all similar to mine, you'll be glad to have family nearby.

Low and Slow Hello Joe, I know you and the wife are most likely on the road to Dallas, Texas now. I hope your travels are safe and you enjoy the trip back home. Best wishes to you and the wife on the future birth of your child. Positive thoughts to you securing a good career position soon. Here's a good web page to use: www.indeed.com/You can type your location of Dallas, TX in to the "Where" box and the type of job in the "What" box and click "Find Jobs." You can also set-up different searches for jobs, and Indeed will email those openings to you. Don't forget to set-up a resume too. Good luck brother and hope to see you back on the forum once you're settled-in

Almost forgot, on the subject of sopapillas, the best are in New Mexico. In Santa Fé my favorite sopapillas are from Tia Sophia, and there's a joint on Cerrillos, right next to Meow Wolf, that offers great sopapillas. You mean earthquakes? We're well overdue for a whopper.

No truer words! I lived in Grapevine for 20 years, right in between the two. OP: hope your trip is going smoothly. My recommendation on cheap food, Rosa’s Cafe, but nobody is as cheap as Pancho’s.

I grew up in SD and still visit a couple of times a year. It still has some wonderful things about it, but has become so gentrified that I couldn't afford to buy the house I lived in. My old neighborhood has even had its name changed to appear more real estate agency friendly. Trendy bars and restaurants have replaced the local little delis, cafes, etc. The division of wealth is staggering. It seems to have become a place with a service class and those they serve, and not much in between. Not quite as bad as San Francisco or L.A., but well on its way.

I had been through several, when I lived in Hollister, my back yard was on a major faultline...for the Bay area, the Hayward Fault is really scary if it ever goes in a big way...locals are aware of the danger but it seems the San Andreas gets all the attention....for good reason though, that is one hell of a crack!

Having lived in San Mateo, CA, Tujunga, CA, and Valencia, CA, they are all basically dangerous fault lines. You just don't know which one and when is going to give California that really big and dreaded jolt. Up here in Central Oregon, it appears we have numerous in-active volcanoes, one about two miles from where I live. Who knows when one will pop on an impromptu urge

Well. We made it. We left Sunday 430 am PST,arrived here today sometime after 9am central. Was a beautiful drive, until just east of Albuquerque all the way though Amarillo. Where we hit the cold dark icy fog. Worst part is during this slow crawl in the dark, only able to see 3 street lines in front of me , my heater decided to stop working and only defrost the lower half of my windshield. Had to bust out some blankets to stay warm....What a trip. I didnt want to stop because the roads were still ok and i didnt want to be stuck iced in at a hotel. My poor wife, dealing with all this pregnant. I love her so much, she is a tough cookie. Anyway, got here safe, wife is resting sound. I am still kind of wired from coffee and stress.
Blessings to the patch for the encouraging words! Be well everyone, hope you enjoyed the weekend and had a nicer Sunday than me!

Glad you made it ok... yeah fog sucks to drive in... I had some close shaves in the San Joaquin Valley. I came to the conclusion that if you have to drive in pea soup in a big truck, about 45 mph on the highway is about right. Slower, you risk getting rear ended, faster than that makes you likely to be an organ donor.

Cali is getting so expensive. People like to talk about taxes but that's just part of the issue. The housing, food, and general cost of living is just too high for normal wage earners and people on fixed incomes. There's a huge influx of Californians into neighbouring states as a result of this. The job market in cali isn't bad but it's also very highly competitive. I miss the old days of California.. That was when you could just sort of "show up" and make it happen. The more expensive and complicated life has become the more difficult that is to do in states like CA. One way that I've seen a lot of people bypass this is by buying an RV or school bus and boondocking on BLM property. The downside to this is that you would need to haul water in and shower elsewhere (like a gym). Solar panels.. You know, you can be set. I remember you talking about some possible alternatives to this grid lifestyle we're all trapped in. Good luck, friend

I'm still here, but it gets more difficult every year. I could live like a king in "Bumf***" Iowa.
