Besides almost all you guys! Not me that's who. Since I started back up with the pipe last July after a 30+ year hiatus, I've confined myself to the "better" blends so widely available now through the magic of the internet. It isn't that I'm a tobacco snob, it's just that there are literally thousands of blends out there, readily available, and within my grasp. I thought my days of OTC tobaccos was over - except for that tub of Chatham Manor, which really doesn't count as an OTC, right?
When Pipes & Cigars recently held a pouch sale, I got all nostalgic one evening, remembering blends my father and grandfather smoked 60 years ago. I found myself ordering SWR, PA, and a few others, but no Carter Hall. I'm not sure why I skipped CH, but I did. I wondered about that, especially since so many people seem to believe that CH is the only way to break in a new briar pipe.
I managed to grab 3 pouches of CH on Cigarbids just to check it out - and for $3.00 a pouch, how bad could it be? Imagine my surprise. This stuff is quite good. Not my favorite tobacco. Not the most exciting tobacco. Not the tobacco I would smoke as a treat or celebration. But a darn good smoke; an honest smoke without adornment or fanfare. I don't have a refined enough palate to break down the tastes, but I know a few tubs of this will be in my future. The Prince Albert, not so much.
The lesson learned is: pay attention!

A classic, for sure … enjoy! I smoked a ton of CH back in the day but decided to stop supporting RJ Reynolds. A couple blends that weened me off of it were C&D Briar Fox and PS Cube Cut. Then came more Burley and less Virginia with Wessex, Solani and Uhle's.

It's one I've been gifted by a couple of members here, and I can see why it's a staple smoke. It's reliable.

Good light dead summer smoke outside in a cob when it’s 93 degrees F; otherwise, I prefer other Burley.

I've been looking to buy a pouch of CH to smoke while doing garden work or chores around the house. Something that I won't be paying too close attention to or expect to much from. Funny thing is for a drug store / OTC blend....... nobody had it. I'll try Wmart next..I know I can get it online but want to get it the old fashioned way......Looking forward to smoking it...never tried it before......

So, I’m smoking a side by side comparison of CH & CM. I’ve also a pipe full of Sutliff J4 Burley to throw in the mix. Results to follow.

Not so for SWR & PA........I never smoked cigarettes and the aroma somehow reminds me of cigarettes........is it just me??

I remember, in the 1970s, our local drugstore had one whole side of an entire aisle filled with nothing but pipe tobacco and accessories for pipe smoking.
Carter Hall is a classic for a reason. Not my "cup of tea", but there it still is.
You know you're old when you start telling people how it used to be.

Never heard of it until I came here. Picked up a pouch of it to try and keep a few pouches for a simple basic smoke that I don't have to stop what I'm doing to enjoy. It's also a great blend for breaking in a new briar as was suggested by Ted.

I don't regularly smoke them, because I don't like the flavor, or the smoke. I found both to be a bit bitey. However, Carter Hall, SWRA, and Half & Half are favorite OTCs. I should really smoke them more often, especially in the shop when I can't focus on what I'm smoking.

I picked up a pouch on cbid not too long ago as well (got mine for $2 ;-)). I haven't tried it yet. Keep passing it up as the tin note doesn't give me anything but straight up average cigar. Not that that is a bad thing as I do still love a good cigar, but I came to pipes because cigars were not giving me what I was looking for.
I need to get over it and load a bowl. Just got so many other blends that call to me when the time comes.
