When I first arrived in NYC, I had to find a job.
I found one... it was in the "Random House" (publishing company) building. Midtown Manhattan.
One morning, I show up as usual, get on the elevator. Bunch of people. One guy stood out... "Mister T". Remember him?
Anyway, I'm standing there, minding my own business, when I hear this little kid who was with his dad say...
"Mister T! Would you autograph my notebook?"
Now, "Mister T" was/is an individual with a singular appearance: earrings, mohawk hair-do, tattoos, muscles, no shirt, just wearing a vest, sneer on his face, taller than anyone else in the elevator...
He says to the kid...
"No, son. I don't like to call attention to myself."
Again, true story. I couldn't make this s*** up if I tried.
