One of my saddest days in NYC was my encounter with Jaco Pastorius.
I'm sure some of you are familiar with Jaco... he was a wildly talented bass player and musician in general... put out two brilliant albums, toured with Joni Mitchell, etc... ask any Jazz aficionado, and they know Jaco.
Anyway, I was down in the East Village, as was my habit in those times. I was bipping down the street, not a care in the world. (I miss those days!)
So, I'm going down the sidewalk, and this guy comes up behind me and demands to know what regiment I'm in.
WTF?
I tell him... "I'm not in the military" and I quicken my stride. The dude keeps up with me.
"What's your rank?"
I'm getting a bit freaked out now, but have no idea what to do. The guy keeps following me.
"What are you doing?"
S***, I'm looking around, trying to find a way out of whatever this is... a cab comes by... I hail it, get in, and get the f*** out of there.
Yes, the guy was Jaco, living on the street, high as a kite...

You think that's bad? I had to call Jimmy Page an idiot at work one day...
