Keith was a hell of a bass player. He remarked one time that he was probably a better bassist than a guitarist.
Anyway, I'm at a party in LA in the early 70s. You can imagine what that was like. I remember seeing Mike Nesmith there, and Tom Waits was hanging out... this was before was was well-known... So was Rickie Lee Jones.
I light up a cigarette, and Rickie Lee asks me for one. I oblige.
This guy comes in the door, unannounced, and it's f***ing Keith Richards.
Keef? F***in' A!
I start trembling. It's Keef. Wouldn't you?
So, he comes over to the sofa and sits down next to me, and asks me for a smoke. I hand him one.
There are instruments in the room. Keef picks up a bass, and starts to do a riff. I pick up an acoustic guitar and start doing a blues thing.
He's getting into it... so am I... I'm thinking to myself... "this can't be happening"

can picture that scene. Think a u-tube of him jammin' with ChuckBerry on state. Chuck mentioned later on..."this the only dude who can come anywhere close to my style of pickin'"
Quite a tribute from Berry

I consider myself lucky, with the people I've met and interacted with, and I try to be humble about it. I'm just an average schmoe who happened to be in places where this s*** happened. I've resisted telling these stories all my life because, first of all, I figured no one would believe them... but now that I'm looking at the end, I feel like I should get them out there.

Not to hijack, but since Chuck Berry was mentioned this was one of my favorite days! - - - - I never got to see him perform, but left me a great memory. Back in '78 I was cruising up I-45 around Corsicana, TX and spied a white Eldorado convertible just ahead. Closer inspection showed red leather interior and a plate reading CBERRY. YES!! Pulling along side he shot me a narrow grin. We paced each other for a bit, up to about 95, and I swear he dropped a gear then hit overdrive. The last I saw of him was when he topped the hill doing 110.... Thanks for the ride. It was a good day to be 20 in Texas.

I am enjoying these short stories. Not because I am star struck. Martin with each story I feel a bit closer to knowing you, in a good way, through your unique experiences.

Tangent story to your Keith! I frequented a small, hole-in-the-wall, blues bar in the Virginia/Highlands area of Atlanta in the early 90s. They have expanded I believe since then. Anyway, if you didn't get there early enough you were standing. So me and my date got there and grabbed the last table and we had 2 chairs left. This guy and gal come in with an enormous man and sit at my table with the big guys standing next to it. Waitress came over to take our reorder and see if they wanted anything. It was Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. Mick was filming "Free Jack" at the time and often caught a show at Blind Willie's. Mick was a super nice guys, Jerry not so much. Anyway that is my Mick story.

In the early 1960's I was a student at a college in Chichester in West Sussex on the south coast of England. I was not a great fan of college food and had a favourite pub at Dell Quay on Chichester harbour where I used to go for snacks and cider ! One night I went into what was really a very small bar and elbowed my way past 4 scruffy men. As I got to the bar the barman said " don't you know who they are? It's the Rolling Stones!" Well I didn't know then but that would change. The Stones had homes at the time at West Wittering, again close to Chichester. I was friendly with the son of the chaplain at my college. He was a police officer at Bognor Regis, the next town. Several times he was called to rowdy parties the Stones were famous for. He got to know them so well before long he was being invited himself. Guess who got to tag along ! Many apocryphal stories came out at that time, regarding Rolls Royce cars in swimming pools, and chocolate bars and famous singers. Were they true ? I will always keep that to myself !

I was just watching "It Came From Beneath the Sea". I was wondering if Martin remembers when the giant octopus attacked the Golden Gate Bridge?

I have stories. I have piloted moments that would make Bukowski blush, but I've never jammed with Keef Richards at a party in 70s San Fransisco. That is litterally something I've only dreamed about. I'd trade a winning Powerball ticket for ten minutes of that.

Funny- as in odd coincidence. An old SNL was on my DVR, ca 1990- recorded yesterday, though. It had a skit where Mike Meyers did a skit with Mick Jagger. But Jagger "was" Richards and Meyers "was" Jagger.
