For the first time in what may be decades, I encountered a pipe smoker in everyday work life. While walking to a second floor in an office building, I noticed a pipe smoker heading out to the parking lot. I immediately walked down to say hello.
As it turns out, he was visiting from Cleveland. We discussed all things pipe smoking; and, as you might imagine, he was in his 60s. He started smoking pipes because his grandfather would let him steal sips while sitting inside on the couch 50 years ago. He only has a few pipes and smokes two blends. The pipe I saw was well worn (parts of the rustication were smooth) and had a crack in it. Sadly, he's leaving tomorrow as I invited him to our Arizona Pipe Club meeting this Saturday.
Pipe: W.O. Larsen Tobacco: Borkum Riff (he mentioned his other pipe tobacco is: cavendish).
God speed, pipe smoker!

Better response than I have had on my man on the street interviews.... I delivered to Cruise America (an Rv rent place) over on Country Club near the big water slide.
He smoked Borkum Riff too, when I told him about the pipe club, he acted like he encountered a Kirby vacuum salesman, and I was definitely on the down low talking about our group.
W. O. Larsen Pipe... they made some great ones!

An event like this is such a rare occurrence these days, I am always cheered to hear about it. The only experience I've had in the last few years is seeing a fellow in my neighborhood driving around in a nicely restored WWII-era Jeep, smoking a Lumberman. I have yet to meet him, but I am always happy when I see him. We nod at each other.

I took a group of folks up in the mountains in Alaska on horseback this last summer on a typically cool, rainy day. We stopped up on a rocky point for lunch, and once I got everyone taken care of, I stepped off to the side, pulled out my pipe, and fired it up. I heard a voice behind me say "I think I'll join you", and I turned around to find one of the guests standing there grinning, holding his pipe. It was a nice pipe that he had picked up on another vacation, I think he said in Italy. It had no name on it, he didn't know the brand. He was smoking Borkum Riff. So we stood there in companionable silence and enjoyed our pipes. After a while, one of the young ladies on the trip noticed that the mosquitoes that were plaguing everyone else were not around the two men standing to the side wreathed in tobacco smoke, so she grabbed her friend and they came over and huddled up with us.

Strange. The Borkum Riff bit, I mean. Such terrible reviews.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet any pipe smokers since I've started the hobby. I will certainly pop over and say hi next time I do.
I'm glad you had a pleasant encounter with that chap, Dan.

Saw a young couple at a restaurant bar outside deck. The guy had a bent Peterson and was smoking --get ready for it--Borkum Riff. We chatted a moment and I left them be. Strange about the Borkum, nobody on the Web ever admits to smoking it, but clearly many do.

I think that there are a lot of pipe smokers out there that look at pipe smoking as a solitary exercise.....nostalgia of a distant past has them getting a pipe and they just hit the drugstore and buy what is available....ignorant to what other blends are out there....artisan pipes or even a $200 pipe is just plain stupid to them, them guys probably look at one of us as if they were drinking a can of beer, we approached them and said..."Hey I am a beer drinker also".
Get away from me weirdo!

I've got a nieghbor down the street who's been here since my folks bought their house in'54 and I grew up on the street. He smoked a pipe back then and still does when he's walking his old weeny dog every afternoon. He's smoked PA since I can remember and still does in a well worn Grabow billiard. Every day when the weather is nice, I can look out my living room window at 2/pm and there he is puffing away as he and "Daisy" stroll down the street.

My wife and I were having a walk down our own street a couple of weeks ago. A few blocks down...she sees a guy walking in his house and says "look, he's smoking a pipe". Sure enough, he came back out and we nicely accosted him. He and his young family are rather new to the neighborhood. He's maybe early 30's, was smoking a basket pipe, and he's rather new to pipe smoking. My wife quickly told him that I restore old pipes, which he'd never heard of. One day soon I'm going to pick one out and restore it for him.

I didn't actually see the piper, but I took the wife shopping the other day and parked next to a car with two pipes in a stand on the dashboard.

Only pipe smoker I've seen is Josh...other than him no one in over 50 years...sad, used to be pretty common...guess they all died off...so like Ol Ed, I wake up, look in the mirror (with horror) and say..."glad to see ya"...I'm still alive!

There's a ton of pipe smokers out there that just stick to the Super Value / Borkum Riff / Ohm, etc. Most of them have 3 or 4 pipes and those are Grabow, Medico, Kaywoodie, etc. The idea of joining a forum to talk about and try 100's of tobaccos in expensive pipes seems silly. We are like the "Micro-brew" crowd of the beer world where most are happy with their Miller and Bud.

Haven't been smoking long. But since I have, I've really been keeping a sharp eye out for any fellow pipers. Unfortunately, I have yet to see any. I do however get entertaining looks from people who see me, smoking my pipe, everywhere I go.

I stopped in Big Sticks to smoke a cigar, chatting with Paul the owner, and said... “hey, there is a guy smoking a pipe in the other room”. Paul smartassedly said “yeah that has been known to happen here.”
Touché!
Went over to chat with the guy and he admitted to seeing us last Saturday, he was impressed by the size of the crowd... said he will be coming to Saturday meetings.

I was standing outside in a strip mall in Louisville Colorado smoking my pipe, when an attractive young lady walking by looked up and seeing my pipe, smiled. Made my day. I must have reminded her of her grandfather.

If they smoke Borkum Riff exclusively, they're still a Brother of the Briar and good smokes to them in my book.

Walked into Lowe’s Foods this morning to pick up a few groceries. Of course I had an Oom Paul not lit hanging from my mouth. Bumped into an older gentleman that had a Cob in his mouth. We both nodded and kept doing our thing. On check out he was right next to me, no communication. Since my last interaction with a pipe smoker down here I learned a lesson!
