Hello all, The other night here in NYC it was around 26 degrees outside, I was on the fence to fire up a bowl on my walk home from work due to the cold weather. I decided to hold off just incase I might do some damage to my pipe, a Dagner chunky poker. I figured that the difference of air temp and the temp of the inner bowl with the burning tobacco might stress the briar and crack it. So my question to you all is when is it too cold to smoke a pipe outside? Your thoughts.
Thanks

I know many who just do what they do and have no issues. I've smoked cheap briar in temps that low and had no issue at all. I can see having a pipe that a lot of money was spent on it and wanting to be careful. I would say get some cheap pipes that smoke well for such a thing. Molina is brand you can get for pretty cheap and they smoke well. I have a handful of them in various styles and I have no complaints about their performance.

I wouldn't sweat it...You just don't want to take a pipe that had been sitting on the dash under them temps, load it up and fire away.
Keep the pipe indoors, load it up and carry on...it is the extreme shock to the briar (frozen briar/ Flame) that may have negative effects.
Nice here today, mid 70's.

I’ve never had an issue with a briar or Cob, I wouldn’t suggest doing the same with a Meerschaum.....” crack “!!!

My recliner's always nice and warm. Haha Same here. Even though I rent a non-smoking home. When I move, I'll have the walls and carpets scrubbed. It's worth a one time fee to smoke as I want for years.

I smoke any and all of my briars and cobs in the cold. I have never worried about the cold affecting the pipes, but it would probably not be a bad idea to warm the pipe up in an inner pocket if the pipe is as cold as the outside temperature. I always have a pipe in my vehicle. Those probably get as cold as single digit temperatures on the coldest days. I would not fire one of those up without gradually warming up with a little body heat first.

If you keep the pipe indoors, then it shouldn't make a difference, since the briar is at room temp and the ember will keep it warm. So there shouldn't be much of a differential between a warmer smoking environment and a colder environment.
... Or use a cob.

I have on a few rare occasions smoked briars in the snow. Nothing happened to the briars. But I wouldn't do that now. In the future I'll just take a cob out there. That assumes I'll ever smoke while in the snow.

I would not worry about temperature differentials.

My son was a village cop in bush Alaska. He stepped out on the porch of his office one winter day at -20 to have a quick bowl...with a meerschaum. It didn't survive. But we've never had a problem with a briar.

When hell freezes over. 👻 But really, don’t worry about briar, it’s pretty durable.

Air has very low specific heat and it's an insulator. Your pipe shouldn't be under any stress. Maybe trying to light it and bathe it in, say, icewater would be a problem I just find I enjoy smoking less when I'm running errands in the cold. It's kind of a time-filler instead of an activity unto itself.

Thanks for all the replies and sound advice!! Its good to know that I won't damage my briars in very cold weather, and when If it gets into the single digits or lower I'll brake out the cobs. But luckily it looks like thats behind us now....hopefully that is...
