Having had King Charles mixture with a cob and with a briar, I really noticed the difference with the tobacco in a briar pipe.
I've now made a note of this on the pouch (soon to be jar) that this is best in a briar (and I'll note the exact pipe in case that makes a difference).
Does anyone else do this or something like it? I.e. does anyone make a note of the type of pipe that works best with a certain tobacco?

Mine would be simple: Blend 1 - MM Cob Blend 2 - MM Cob Blend 3 - yep, you guessed it, MM Cob
I could see the benefit for those with multiple types and styles of pipes that get a different experience from different pipes.

I like englishes in wide bowls and Virginia's in tall, more narrow bowls. I tend to grab a tobacco and whichever pipe I feel like smoking and just go with it.
I have 1 cob and 1 briar for Lakelands. My Michael Addis Dublin only gets 5100 put in it. My meer gets heavy lat blends.
I dont label anything pipe specific, but I do keep a mental note of it.

I don't do anything that is so specific that it pairs a pipe with a tobacco. I follow some general rules, such as aromatics with meerschaum or cob, Virginias in smaller bowls, English in any pipe. Strong Nic blends or hot blends go in smaller pipes.

Yup, I sure do. I have a journal of what pipes smoke best with a particular tobacco/blend. Works best for me, also clouded the data just in case the book does a vanishing trick.

To a point I do and sometimes its how much better it smokes or just a thing my brain tells to to do. Examples... The pipe I that Cramptholomew made for me is tall and for me dryer blends do well that also hold up to longer smokes so it has seen a few English/Balkan blends but mostly Virginia and VaPers. My MM Country Gentleman became my pipe for Deertongue after I pared it with C&D's Gentleman Caller. My brain said "a gentleman pipe with a gentleman tobacco" and so I did and here we are. Falcons I like with aromatics as they tend to be more wet and so I like a pipe that can capture that moisture. Its easy to take off the bowl, dump the moisture and keep a dry smoke going if too much pools up. That's about the extent of it for me.

My system is pretty simple:
Lat in meer. Va/VaPer in briar. Burley in cobs.
I don't have to write any of it down....yet.

I'm awful about this. "Oh, is this a pipe? Ok, I'll use this one."
Except for deertongue and Lakelands. They have cobs. I'm going to make myself a Lakeland only briar.

Once I get more Lakelands in my cellar I wanna get a freehand to dedicate them. For some reason my brain tells me that's a fitting combo.

Like my Churchwarden.... Shortcut to Mushrooms and Hobbits Weed belong in that one. Not for the quality of the smoke, but because my brain tells me it's the right thing to do. I get what you mean McWiggins

I have used the same Peterson XL23 pipe for Penzance since 2010, other than that, no.

never did that. Any baccy in any pipe, all smoke good. Yep, meer can do somewhat diff that briar, no matter what baccy. Just my long time way of doing things.

I like pretty much everything in a cob. I like pretty much everything in briars, too...also meers...pretty simple for me. I've noticed the few times I reach for a Va or VaPer that I usually put into a wider bowl...maybe a Briar Spirit Pipe.

I just keep it in my head. Generally, my pairings are pretty simple. Virginias and VAPers - narrow bowl Burley blends - wide bowl Latakias - Medium bowl Lakelands - MM cob Like my Churchwarden.... I have a MM Cob for Lakelands. I wrote LAKE on the bottom of it.
Everything else is any tobacco with any pipe that's clean.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I don't dedicate pipes to certain tobaccos anymore. I enjoy the character my pipes take on with various genres of tobacco... makes it kind of a personal thing. YMMV.

YMMV. ...to follow up my above remarks... I have a friend who spent a number of years in China. He became fascinated with the ritual of "Tea." He returned to the US with an impressive collection of tea pots. He mentioned to me (I had never heard this before) that, after a certain point of use, it was no longer necessary to put tea in the pot... one would simply boil water and enjoy the essence of the "experience" of a particular tea pot. I'm not sure it translates directly, but my feeling about my pipes is somewhat similar. I can pick one out at an odd moment, and get the sense of what was last smoked in it, and what was smoked in it before. It's a subtle thing, but is real to me.

I.e. does anyone make a note of the type of pipe that works best with a certain tobacco? I'm not that methodical about it. I've only done this with four pipes; two meerschaum, and two are calabashes. They're reserved for English/Balkan blends. My briars, clays, and a corn cob are reserved for the tabac du jour.

Great pairings imprint on me and I tend to remember them for the next time. I'm sure many of you are like me, in that you almost have a mental thumbprint of each of your frequently smoked pipes and can actually guess which will be best for a blend. I am often surprised though. haha

I completely agree. And that is an interesting comparison.

I was wondering if pipe material or shape makes a difference. This thread tells me that it's probably in my head and I should just learn how to adjust for moisture content. I'd like to post more questions, but you guys seem to have answers for all of my questions. LOL Great group here for sure.

I barely even write dates on most of the stuff I have jarred up. As far as pairing blends with certain pipes, I don't put much thought into it beyond making sure tobacco goes inside a pipe.
I also don't smoke Lakelands though. If I did I would have a pipe or two specifically for those. Can't run around having every pipe tasting like Mabeline.
