Now, I don't have anything remotely comparing to Martin's stories, but this one is mine. When my wife and I first met 30+ years ago, the Coast Guard transferred me from St Simons Island GA to Grand River OH. I was standing two days on, two days off duty with every other weekend of F, S, S off or on in Ohio and my future wife still lived in south GA. We were maintaining a long distance relationship so I was either making the long drive over a three day weekend (I was young and stupid in love) or flying when I had enough money. I was waiting to catch a connecting flight in Charlotte NC one day and spending my time people watching. I looked down the hallway and saw this guy wearing a fedora, faded blue jeans and a sleeveless jean jacket pulling a carry on bag walking toward me. My first thought was, "Who the fvck does this guy think he is, Aaron Neville?" He had some serious guns, so my next thought was "Well, I guess if he is going to imitate a look, at least he is pulling it off pretty well". I didn't think much of it until I looked up again and he was walking by where I was sitting. It was Aaron Neville. Aaand...That's all I've got

Nice story. I don't think I've even seen anyone famous in an airport.

I've brushed by a few of them but my favorite memory was when I was 6 and went to Disney. Bam Bam Bigelow was in front of us in line and I told him I liked the tattoos on his head.

During my stint in the Navy I was sent to Bayou Vista where they made the Swift boats, the boats had a habit of wanting to submarine cutting throttles back from full. I flew into Houston , in the concourse was a shoe shine station, older man up on one of the chairs with a little boy, the boy was curious about my uniform, I put him on my knee, answered his questions and played with him while his father got a shine. He left and told the shineman my shine was paid and thanked me for keeping his boy out of mischief. I thanked him and he left. Shine man says to me You don’t know who that is? No I said, shine man says, that Tom Landry Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Oh the fix on the boat was simple, Cajuns know boats, simply sliding cabin back 6 inches and reattaching machine gun mount back 6 inches, solved the problem.

Nice story. I don't think I've even seen anyone famous in an airport. I think that is why my first thought was that it was somebody trying to look like Aaron Neville. It was also strange to me that he was by himself. I think it was about the time that he had a pretty big hit with Stevie Nicks, so it wasn't like he was an unknown or niche type guy.

Meh, I have met a ton of famous people. Other than something to brag about, it's not a big deal. Personally I wouldn't walk across the street to meet anyone just cause their famous.

I've met plenty of famous people at conventions! haha
The most natural conversation I've ever had with a celeb was R. Lee Ermey. Veterans know what I mean. When you find out someone served, you instantly have a certain level of familiarity with them- Especially if it was the same branch. I've been dragged to parties by girlfriends and just stood around miserable till I find that one other grunt. Then we stand on the porch chain-smoking and grumbling about where we'd rather be. haha

Great story, Jim, and nice photo, John!
For the record, I definitely never intended to "brag" about meeting famous folks. Most that I have met were connected to the work I did in costuming... Broadway, movies and television.
I enjoy hearing other's encounters because it humanizes these people... a view that we seldom see on screen or in the press.
If I seemed to be bragging, may I offer my sincere apologies? No offense intended.

Drama, you met Keith. That's in the same ballpark as shaking hands with Sinatra. You had opportunities any of us would die for.

Not quite! I would not have shaken the hand of Sinatra unless it'd have been embarrassing not to. And I'd cross the street to chat with Keith Richards, but how likely is that unless he strolled around the peninsula greeting folks?

The closest thing to a brush with celebrity for me was Ty Murray hanging around a ranch in Texas that I riding on for a week. I was not overly impressed.

The one real celebrity unknown but to Military Hospitals was a brain surgeon who loved to fish, he did trauma surgery all over the world, his payment was to be flown to parts of the world to fish. He was a wealthy man, owning part of a large construction firm in Alabama. I was introduced to him by a good friend a retired Major in the Air Force, Stanley was his cousin. I took him out for Specs, was impressed with his tieing leader skills. I don’t pry, finally he said I’m a retired brain surgeon, eyes gave out, now I fish full time. Ok I said, later he said I like fishing with you, you don’t talk. I told him I”ll make up for it tonight at supper. To me he was a Star of the first degree.

Hah! I don't have the beard now. I tried to meld the drawing with an actual photo, but couldn't do it. It looked like I should have been able to, but no soap. Can it be done?

I'm not sure it can be done. I think it's either what you have or a real photo... Unless you take your avatar and use an external photo editing software and meld it that way.

The celebrity posts have reminded me of a few encounters, albeit very brief that I had with people of celebrity status. We went to the auto show one year when I was in high school and Mario Andretti was there signing autographs. He had something to say to every kid and adult that stepped up to meet him. Seemed like a very warm and genuinely nice man. Thta is one of the few times in my life that I really wanted an autograph from anyone and he made it memorable. On another occasion, a few years later, I was at an air show featuring the Confederate Air Force. Pappy Boyington was signing autographs. One of my favorite planes of all time is the F4U Corsair and I really wanted Boyington's autograph. After waiting in line for some time, a father and his young son, stepped up to get an autograph. All they had for Pappy to sign was a show flyer or something similar. He cussed them out and said he was only signing his book, which was for sale there. I stepped out of line and walked away very dissappointed. My last incident is a very simple but memorable encounter we had with Robert Redford. I was in college in Durango, Colorado and a friend and I drove down to Sante Fe for the weekend. We had tied one on the night before and spent the night sleeping it off in the back of my pickup in a parking lot. We were young and foolish. Woke up and started looking for a place to get a cup of joe and some cheap breakfast. We were cutting through an alley and see this blond guy in denim with a leather jacket walking towards us. It was Redford. He could see we recognized him and we probably looked like hell. He smiled and nodded at us, said "boys" and we smiled back, speechless and we passed by each other. Then we spent the next 30 minutes talking about it.
I like hearing all of these stories from you all about these encounters. I don't think any of this has been people bragging about these moments. I encourage everyone to relate these stories if you have them. I for one will read them every time, just as I will read your stories about special moments with family and friends and inspirational or nostalgic content. At any gathering, I will be the guy over sitting with the eldest person in the room, listening to whatever they have to pass on to me. All of this reminiscing has now made me a little melancholy. I miss my grandparents mightily.

I see someone remotely that looks like a famous person and I would kid friends and family like it was for real. Ran into a bunch of Kenny Rogers, Hemingway etc..so I'm with a group engaged in a marathon blackjack bender and this guy that is the spiting image of the drummer from the group Alabama sits down at the table next to us. Now the older mother of most of my group is a big country music fan so I lean over and say "Hey look, it's the drummer from Alabama!" She starts waving at him and jumping up and down and the rest of us are all just busting with laughter. Then, at the exact moment, dead silence as we all realize it is the drummer from Alabama.

Speaking of Alabama
When I was stationed in Destin FL back the early 90s Jeff Cook, the guitar player from Alabama, came to Destin to fish every now and then. He would show up in a little bar that I hung out in once in a while. I used to play a little blues harp and would play a few songs with the house band on weekends. One night he came in and when the band went on break he played some. He asked me to play along with him. Then we played with the band for most of the night. It was a hell of a party.
The next day his boat broke down about 30 miles off shore and I had to go out and tow him back to port. We were both pretty hung over...
