So I've been enjoying C&D Star of the East and compared to say Rattray's Accountant's blend I notice that Star of the East has a creamy almost thick feeling to the smoke. I'm wondering what contributes to the different feel. Very new to piping and I apologize if this isn't clear or has been asked before.

The Turkish/Orientals. I like smoking straight Yenidje for that reason.

Yo stic
The Monell Chemical Senses Center defines that creaminess attribute as 'kokumi', which is being researched in Japan. The same resources first fingered unami, the savory dimension that meats and fermented products contribute. Duane's thoughts are in line with my thinking.

Have been wanting to try this blend. Was wondering if it is a heavy Latakia or not?

In other businesses (food and beverage) they call this attribute "mouth feel"

Is creamier better? If so, may I ask if accountants mixture is still worth trying?

I may try mixing them 50/50 to see what I get.

Thanks for the responses. Legend Lover the Accountant's mixture is middle of the road to me. I tried it because of some reviews and I fall into the unmemorable camp with this one. I do like Star of the East quite a bit though. Still a total noob and can't really say how heavy it is with latakia.

Yo high - SOTE and SOTE Flake are pretty pronounced with the Lat, almost to the point of Latbombness for some. Accountant's has Lat, too, but not quite as much as Rattray's Black Mallory.

Outstanding. I have a tin of McC Yenidje in stow. Looking forward to that. Any suggestion on how long I should wait for maximum enjoyment?

I agree with Duane. Though I wouldn't have known prior to his comment.
I have certainly noticed the creaminess, but always thought it was latakia- Easy mistake for a novice like me, I guess, since Turkish, Oriental, and Lat are often a package deal.
Black House and Presbyterian Mixture come to mind as creamy favourites.

What exactly is McC Yenidje? I've tried searching for it and come up empty. I found Magnum Opus and figured out I'm on a slippery slope that may lead to this TAD you all speak of.....

Unfortunately, they went belly up this past year, so eBay or a forum trade would be the only way to find their blends.
Yeah, man. TAD (Tobacco Acquisition Disorder)is easy to get. haha SO many great smokes to try and then a whole new level of TAD once you find what you like and start buying en masse to cellar.

McC is "McClelland" and you're not going to find it being sold as they closed their doors last year. What you will find are sellers online asking huge prices for their blends or at times, someone willing to sell a tin or two in the pipe community.

Black House and Presbyterian Mixture come to mind as creamy favourites. You're not off in thinking Latakia as it is made with a "Turkish Oriental varietal called Smyrna". Full Quote... "Latakia begins as a Turkish Oriental varietal called Smyrna. These leaves are hung in barns on the island of Cyprus, and a smoldering fire is started on the floor of the barn. The smoke from the aromatic woods eventually permeate the tobacco, turning it dark brown to black, depending upon how long it hangs there. When burned, the tobacco gives off a campfire-like aroma, and imparts a similar flavor, although there are also some savory and spicy elements as well. The smokiness can easily dominate a blend. Latakia was also made in its birthplace, Syria, in an area near the port city of...you guessed it...Latakia. They used a different type of tobacco as the base, and the wood burned was a specific type, combined with herbs to impart flavor. Because of overforesting, the Syrian government forbade the use of the wood in the process, so none has been made in well over a decade. Considering the strife in the region, it's highly questionable if Syrian Latakia will ever be made again. Some companies have a small, dwindling, supply of the tobacco, but it's expected to run out soon." www.pipesandcigars.com/faq/a-little-bit-about-english-blends-latakia-101/1818142/

Cool. I also think of Lat being smooth or powdery. Like it's rubbed down in talc. haha

Which McC Yenidje? I love Highlander fresh and with age. The Yenidje I referenced was whole leaf from Leaf Only.

McClelland's Yenidje Highlander is my favorite though not straight Yenidje, and was discontinued a year or two prior to McClelland shutting their doors. I stashed a few dozen tins of that one before it disappeared. Straight Yenidje was once available at Leaf Only a few years ago.

Is creamier better? If so, may I ask if accountants mixture is still worth trying? Depends on preference I've long since tired of heavy Lat blends and now opt for straight Orientals or Virginia/Orientals.

If you like Basma, there's a new shipment in at WLT.com and is reported to be out of this world. I'm picking up a couple pounds today myself.

Old holiday mixture also has that creamy note.
Sutliff makes a great repro.

I hate to flood this thread but only a pipe tobacco manufacturer would name something "accountants mixture"..
Accounting just isn't the most exciting career in the world. Sorry to offend anyone who is a proud member of that trade here. I remember my old university professor telling us "accounting is really boring. I've done it for forty years. I feel your pain." As we took an exam. Hilarious.
