I admit, I have a bad case of TAD and a seriously bad case of PAD. My PAD draw me to eBay like a bee to pollen, and I am constantly chasing old English pipes. I was extremely drawn to a 1908 BBB Own Make Bent Bulldog. It was in beautiful shape, and it would fill the BBB niche in my collection of the great English pipe makers. I had been following it, since it was posted, and I was prepared to out snipe the snipers. I had money money set aside, and I was ready to go fairly deep into my pipe savings to get that pipe. But, last night, I came up $11 short on that pipe, and I went to bed rather bummed. Being a big boy, after a fashion, I rationalized my loss as proof that that sometimes things are simply not meant to be, and off to bed I went. So, at work today, I pounded away at the keyboard as usual, and avoided the calls to my cellphone that I did not recognize. Around one in the afternoon, I received a call from Anniston, Alabama. Now, I rarely answer calls that I do not recognize, but something about that place rang a bell in the back of my brain. On what was likely the last ring, I decided to answer. Making the connection as soon as I picked up - the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) is in Anniston - I prayed that they were calling about my having won a 1911 in the fist round of the 1911 lottery. Sure enough, they were calling to say I had won an ex-military issue M1911 Service grade pistol. Of the various grades, Service grade his the highest grade available. With the provision of my credit card and confirmation of my FFL, my new, old, toy is on its way. And with that, God once again had the last laugh

To be honest, your military M1911 Service Grade is the much cooler of the two. Congratulations!

I have a Wilson Combat CQB Elite 1911 I bought on a whim years ago. While I LOVE that pistol, it is a new pistol. I've always an older one, and I put my name in the lottery, but I did not have any hopes of winning. Now, I have another piece of history to add to my collection.
Pics will be posted upon receipt.

Sometimes you are the windshield some times you are the bug....You lucky son of a gun! I renewed my subscription to Garand collectors magazine so as to qualify in a gun club to purchase a 1911, but cellaring tobacco drained away the funds for me to pull the trigger. I have bought two M1 Garand service grades from the CMP in the past, and both were beauties...one was a Springfield post WWII all correct, I don't know how in the hell that one got past being put to auction. The other was a Harrington & Richardson post WWII, that is a hell of a shooter...I am right handed, but have right eye astigmatism, so I shoot as a lefty, iron sights...the errant round at the bottom was my flinch. I bought an Inland (GM motors) M1 carbine that has an M2 stock...no milling of the stock if I want to go full auto.....J/K! A Mossberg M44 .22 with a lead lapped barrel used for training the troops.....one of my favorite guns to shoot....There is a threaded shaft that goes in the magazine if I want to shoot bunny fart loads of .22 short...pretty cool. I bought several crates of Greek Ball ammo when it was going for .30 cents per round, at the time, I felt like I was really dropping coin...I wish I had bought more! The CMP is a great organization, I am glad that pistols were allowed when the politicians added it to a bill when the then president had his nuts in a vise and had to sign it to get what he wanted....it is a shame that all of the 1911's and Browning Automatic rifles and Thompsons were sent to the torches under past presidents. Congratulations Patrick, I hope someday I will get the chance to meet you and look at your new pistol. A word of caution....Early on in the 1911 production, metallurgical issues caused some slides to crack, I am sure that you won't have one that old, but if you do, take the appropriate measures. I used to be on the 1911 forum, "Johnny Peppers" had a collection of basically every 1911 variant, Singers, Remington Rands, etc....pretty mindblowing in scope.

True piece of history there, congratulations!. If you plan on shooting it, change all the springs is my advice, regardless of what has been done to restore them, then softball the loads and let the past wash over you.

LSU..nice gun! you don't get any better than a 1911 Trailboss.. nice shooting. With a little practice you might actually be able to hit that quarter next time.

Found one of my Commanders going to work passing by a pawn shop, had a Starvel finish, bullshitted the guy behind the counter, it’s a short flashy pistol, doesn’t have much value. What’ll you give me, 200$ and that’s pushing it, 250$ and it’s yours, SOLD. LOVE MY COMMANDER.

Now with pics!! I got it in today, so I am counting it as a late birthday present to myself (the 17th). From my research, it is a Remington Rand frame and and slide. It's obviously been recoated at some point in its history, and their are new grips, but my research shows it is a mid-1943 Remington Rand pistol based upon the serial and the inspectors proof ("FJA") for Col. Frank Atwood. It also has an Ordnance Department acceptance stamp. I was hoping for a WWII pistol to go with my Garand and WWII M1903's.

I could not agree more. That is a very nice piece, and a nice score on the nomenclature/ history. Sorry I didn’t put my name in the hopper.

The Service grade options are by far the best value in my opinion (at least with rifles).....the lower grades can be more of a crap shoo, and the collector grades are overpriced....the auction items would put me in divorce court.
I belong to the Garand collectors association, and a friend of mine is an FFL that charges nothing for receiving products, so I have that going for me...I am pretty much done with my cellar, don't need much in the way of pipes, so...Patrick you are an ENABLER!

Sure enough, they were calling to say I had won an ex-military issue M1911 Service grade pistol. Of the various grades, Service grade his the highest grade available. With the provision of my credit card and confirmation of my FFL, my new, old, toy is on its way. Congratulations, Patrick! I'd love a M1911 Service grade. 👍 I have bought two M1 Garand service grades from the CMP in the past ... Nice. I wish I had bought one years ago when I had the chance.

I really got in on the tail end of the deal...they are pretty well drying up as far as lend/lease rifles coming back from Allies. There are a gazillion Garand's in circulation though, and there are deals to be had, do your homework and get one...they are a lot of fun to shoot, and are if you put the time in, you can get one for a reasonable price.
