Looks like it could be a winner...question is how many folks want to donate...people like me, retired and poor, would have a hard time making this a success. I'm not crying just making a point...I hope the rest of you is in better shape than I am...and if you are not and are like me..better start praying cause that's all I got.

LoL! I wouldn't put any faith in some guy who doesn't even know the name of the magazine he's trying to replace. Probably some noob who thought Pipesmagazine.com had a hard copy.

At $150 achieved of it's $5,000 goal, it should only be 66 days or so for the objective to be accomplished.
I'll keep an eye on this and see if it gains any traction.
I for one would love to see something like this succeed.

Michael Curcio is not a noob. He's a good guy. I've had quite a few chats online about pipes with him. I'm not saying anything pro or con about the endeavor to start a pipe magazine. I just want to clear up the false assumption that Michael doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to pipes and the pipe community. My personal experience tells me otherwise.

Yes, Michael is a stand up guy for sure! And his business, Bishop's Pipes www.facebook.com/Bishopspipes/ is becoming one of the best up and coming shops to buy restored estate pipes at a fantastic price, I know because I'm a repeat customer many times over and also met him at the NY Pipe show last weekend. Also, I believe Michael also caught wind of this and shared it to The Gentlemen’s Pipe Smoking Society on FB for the same reason I did here. As far as the other gentlemen who is heading the GO Fund Me, I don't know him or anything about him besides what is posted on his Go Fund Me link.

Clarifications appreciated and endorsements noted by those who do not know him (like myself). As to whether I'm prepared to contribute to a magazine, entirely different question. I didn't subscribe or buy the first one so it is not likely I'll jump in on this. But it will be interesting to watch and see what kind of success he has with the fundraiser.

GoFundMe for a magazine why not Kickstarter seems more appropriate and more professional way to go but that's just my opinion.

As a retired managing editor of a monthly magazine that was owned by a printing company, 5K would not be enough to just print one issue of a magazine.

This was my original thought. 5k doesnt seem like enough to do anything with. Depending on what you pay your staff and including advertising sales, number of pages, how much color you use and paper quality, I would estimate between 8 & 10K. If you want a glossy magazine on bright white paper then you are probably looking at 12k a month. You also have to consider mailing costs. I’ve done some consulting work for people interested in starting printed publications and recommend that they have the money to cover all costs for six to nine months before starting. Reality is that advertisers are not going to pay in advance and some will take 60 to 90 days before paying. Getting paid subscribers is a whole problem in itself.

I'm talking about the shmo with the lapsed cigar blog who's soliciting money to start a pipe magazine. Pledge what you want but right now all Erin McRoy and his The Smoking Jacket would get from me is the time of day if I was in a good mood.

Everything Pappyjoe says is spot on as far as my understanding of producing magazines... his fellow Louisianan has said as much over the years. Tom Gresham has been in the sports magazine publishing business, as was his father, “Grits” Gresham.
Magazine circulation has taken a pounding with the advent of the internet... it would be wiser to produce an online magazine, and sell monthly subscriptions.
I prefer to have a magazine in my hand to read, but frankly, once I subscribe, I find myself with unread copies laying about.

I ran a monthly and fishing magazine from 1995 though August 2005. Unfortunately it didn't survive Katrina.

You ought to meet up with Tom then, very personable a really nice guy...he lives in Slidell, and his brother has a restaurant there. I wish I could have met Grits, he sounded like a great guy.
Gresham’s guntalk syndicated radio show is also available via podcast.

A champion of the cause, and at the SHOT show annually . His first person defender videos are invaluable in helping educate about threats, and how to respond.

Podcasts have been the replacement for me. The Country Squire Radio is my weekly commute enjoyment. At home I hit the YouTuber's - Briar Blues, London Calling, Muttonchip Piper, The Pipe Nook, Matches860 and StuffAndThings.
