After nearly thirty years of pipe smoking, my cellar is complete and my pipe collecting is done. In the past few weeks I've knocked my pipe collection down from nearly 200 to 42. My wife is just not getting that I'm done. Last month she ordered me a Nording duck, and with the estate sale at SPC, she grabbed an unsmoked Preben Holm Hallmark volcano.😕 I've stepped away from pipe and tobacco collecting in favor of my growing barber hobby. Now if she started buying getting me vintage barber tools, that would be amazing!😄

I think you are blessed!! What are you going to do with the Preben? Haven't decided yet. Maybe a Christmas pipe or perhaps hold it over for IPSD next year. Big fan of his work, I picked this one up a few years ago.

Big fan of his work, I picked this one up a few years ago. I am a big fan as well and have a collection of his (made by Preben's shop(s)) lower and mid level pipes. I can kick myself for not buying a few of his Private Collection, Hallmark, Noble Prize etc pipes when they were more plentiful and affordable on the vintage market. PS I did manage to snag, 10-12 years ago, two 6 grade Handcut pipes made during the Snug Harbour days.

Sounds like a reasonable arrangement you have.

I love old barbershop stuff. Love the smells of the lotions and tonics, second only to airplane glue. My grandfather was a barber of note here in St. Louis. who would get a lot of celebs' biz when they came here. Dad and I were playing cards with him after he retired. He got a phone call. Told the caller he had retired. With tears in his eyes he told us that was Allan Jones, calling to see where he could get a good haircut. There are four pics Allen gave him over the years, this being the best. For those who do not know, he was a great singer and father of Jack Jones. He replaced Zeppo Marx when he left the Marx Brothers. Grandpa was a humble man, making these stories more special.

I did not mention them as I only have a handful of these lines. 😁 There are others like the zodiac pipes...

I'll leave the others unspoken then.😁 lol Not so long ago many pipers had no idea of the entirety of Preben's pipe lines. At the time, I bought a number of these lesser known brands at good prices. Since then pipedia has updated their data base making this information easy to uncover and experienced sellers are more aware. I might have had an inadvertent hand in the spread of such knowledge. How you might ask? I had communication with a number of estate sellers back in the day who asked questions and/or who I informed as a courtesy. One of the major contributors to Preben's story on pipedia is one such person, who I used to correspond with as to the uniqueness of some of his auctioned items (in particular Preben's lesser known lines.). 😁 I tend to be open about such things, even when it might hurt my bottom line. PS Besides the upper end, Preben's Pipe-Dan line is another that I was unable to buy. These pipes are rarely seen, even a decade + ago, and can go for higher prices, sometimes close to the high end Preben Holm creations. This is not only because of their rarity, but their significance. Preben Holm made pipes for the Pipe-Dan shop early in his career.

Duane, you have a great wife, that fully supports your hobbies, no matter which you choose. Forty two pipes and ALL the tobacco you’ve cellared, your set for life! I have much more than I’ll ever smoke. In the past year I’ve sold a few pipes and gifted others. Only pipe I’d purchase now would have to be a real bargain.

That's a beautiful pipe. It would make my day if my wife ever bought me tobacco or a pipe... It would make my year.
That probably won't ever happen. She says she will never buy me something that will kill me. She does buy McDonald's though.

My wife looks at me and my modest cellar and asks "How much more do you need?" I tell her that it is all gonna come crashing down with internet sales being outlawed...she doesn't know anything about tobacco or pipes for that matter, but she puts up with me and my hobby/habit/lifestyle and that is all that counts. We don't have much money so every dime counts...that's a result of my failure to live my life as though it counted...now it does and I'm too late.
Think about your future and do something about it...now while you still can.

Plus, I've always been the family hair groomer, I may as well learn some skill to it.😁

I really don't mind it badly, but while trying to step away from all of the buying and reduce my collection to a few favorites, she's not letting me.😕

Pipes are meant to be smoked - and it would be a waste to let that beauty go unlit.
