I’ve been reading and hearing about the slow smoking events happening at pipe shows and events. I am a bit intrigued, even though I likely won’t get to one any time soon. I thought I would give it a try this afternoon as it is a perfect pipe smoking day on my patio. I weighed out 3 grams of War Horse Ready Rubbed and first tried to pack it in a Savinelli Bing’s Favorite. Realizing the bowl was too small, I packed it in a Comoy’s Everyman bent Dublin which was probably a bit small. I did the two light thing, albeit with a soft flame lighter given I was smoking outside with a gentle breeze. I managed 1 hour, 6 minutes, 46 seconds. Not the most enjoyable smoke I’ve ever had but I felt good about the time. Perhaps if I ever get the opportunity at a real event I won’t embarrass myself!

I've smoked the War Horse Bar (Red) and the War Horse Plug (Green)...so my question is, how did you like the Ready Rubbed? Have you tried either of the first 2? I'm looking for what the difference is between Ready Rubbed and the other 2 blends.

Good time, over an hour👍👍👍. You need a pipe with a tall chamber....like 1 3/4” to 2”. In my 2” stack chimney I packed 3.35 grams of Billy Budd Blonde and my best slow time was one hour and 48 minutes.....I didn’t keep the seconds on record. One light and a tamp and a relight. Took me to the end. But, slow smoking in general is not for me!!

The Red and Green are more heavily topped while the Ready Cut is a more natural tobacco flavor.

It is never consciously planned on my part, but sometimes a slow burning tobac and a deep bowl yield long smokes.

That's impressive. I smoke way too fast.
Will you do it again?

That's nothing. I can get through a bowl of McB BF in under ten minutes!

Impressive accomplishment under the conditions.

I've never tried to "slow smoke" for time.
But I'm sure I can get close to the record of quickness in a legend. I'm surprised none have caught on fire!

I made it through an entire season finale of Game of Thrones. After my friend remarked on how long the episode was, I looked it up and it was 1hr 19minutes. Then I realized I was smoking the same pipe. Considering I lit up shortly before starting... I think I was closer to an hour and a half than an hour twenty. 45Mins is usually a long smoke for me though.
Pipe was my Peterson Christmas 2016 BB stuffed with Bothy Flake or Capstan. I remember it was a nice, dense flake.

Congrats on hitting the hr + mark on your extended smoke! I never tried it but I may give it a whirl now.

That's impressive. I smoke way too fast. Will you do it again? Probably at some point. I could stand to slow my normal cadence so it might be good practice. With no relights, it would seem not all tobacco is well suited, but it should prove instructive.

The goal of the slow smoke contest is to teach you how to smoke slowly. This will decrease tongue bite, improve the flavor, help you relax, and make you irresistible to your wife.

I've heard of Slow Smoke competitions. What are the rule/regulations for them? I'm a pretty slow smoker the way it is. I like taking my time and savoring my tobacco. Heck, if I smoke flake tobacco in my Savinelli 673, usually takes me about 90 minutes to finish the pipe. But there are more than a few relights from it sitting a bit and going out.

I've also noticed that if I'm here on the Patch, I have more than my average re-lights lol I'm about 45 minutes into my morning smoke, and barely half of the bowl of my MM Washington 5th ave is smoked. LOL

If I recall correctly, everyone gets the same pipe, the same amount of tobacco by weight, a tamper, and two matches. The only time you're allowed another match is if one of yours breaks or won't light. Last person to be able to produce smoke is the winner.

here's an example, although in this example they are using different pipes, but the same amount of tobacco...

I'd use a box of matches for my charring light. LOL
