Just curious. For the first time, I've noticed a kind of chemically astringent taste when breaking in a couple of pipes this month. One was a cob, and one was a Peterson. Has never happened before. And now, after having smoked about 5 bowl fulls, that taste is almost gone. Has anyone else experienced that? And explanation as to what that could be?

I've gotten a chemical taste from certain OTCs, especially Prince Albert, but never from a pipe. What tobacco(s) were you smoking to break-in your pipes?

Well, I started with Peterson's Sherlock Holmes, then Drucquer & Sons Inns of Court, then John Cotton's Number 1 & 2. The same taste came through on each tobacco.

Well, it's not the tobacco. Were the bowls treated? Had you taken antibiotics recently?

Shouldn't happen unless the inside was stained. But that shouldn't happen on a cob. As Walkman suggests, any medication changes lately?

No, I don't take any medications. And don't get that taste from my other briars that are already broken in. The Peterson was the only one that had the pre carbon treatment.

I can't smoke most drugstore blends because they're so funky and caustic. Half&Half was like car exhaust to me.

Pete's were notorious for their foul tasting bowl coatings in the past, though they have gotten better. If the cob experience followed the Peterson, I would suspect 'mouth-over' from the Pete, cobs having no bowl coating.

There was a Bulk tobacco I bought one time. I can't remember the name of it but when I smoked it out of my peterson 221. it tasted like soap.

Did you happen to store those tobaccos in a place where there could have been chemical fumes around?

Usually only happens when the inside of the bowl is stained. You can sand with the proper diameter dowel or as I do......I use my cigar mud. Make a thick paste and lightly brush the entire inner chamber. Gently run a pipe cleaner thru the draft hole to keep it open. This method has yet failed me, also you’ll notice a cake builds up faster, more evenly as well. GOOD LUCK👍👍👍

I'm smoking another cob, with the same Inns of Court in it right now; now foul taste at all. TG

Did you happen to store those tobaccos in a place where there could have been chemical fumes around? I don't believe so. They were both stored with my other pipes, that have no such problem. But they were both new arrivals. But bought two cobs at the same time, but had no such problem when I broke in the first one. I think Mike might have hit on it, might have just been the Peterson, and then smoking the cob afterwards. Good news, after smoking the last bowl in that Peterson, the foul taste was almost gone. Think it must almost be burned out.

Pets are notorious for stain in the bowl, get some everclear or whatever alcohol you have and swab bowl out, when finished, burn out alcohol, takes only a few seconds and you will have gotten it clean. Worked for me.

The Peterson came with carbon treatment in the bowl, so wouldn't be able to tell if it was stained; but I was guessing the a bit of stain or finish in the bowl might have been the culprit. I will have to look into cigar mud for future new pipes that present a problem.

Worked for me. Well I just so happen to have Everclear ( I use it for pipe cleaning). Is there any risk to flame coming out and burning the exterior surface of the pipe?

NO,NO,NO, Just inside the bowl! Whew I misread, thought you were gonna flame everything, HaHa. Flame just lasts one or 2 seconds, just dry inside of bowl with paper towels before flaming. Flameing is just getting rid of last particle of alcohol.

Only one it ever happened to me on was a Rattray's briar pipe. Chemical taste was gone after 3 bowls.

Ok, I figured out the problem. I have a sinus infection. Figured it out when my meals started having that same weird taste. Downside is no pipe for a few days. But not for long.

That'll do it alright. When I have a cold I can't smoke for 2 weeks, tastes like I'm smoking my septic tank.

I agree with the stain on the Peterson being a possibility.
If it is a Non Missouri Meerschaum of unknown origin, buyer beware...P&C used to give these away in the tobacco of the month club promotion, I tried giving them away to people to use for snowmen...couldn't get any takers.

Thanks for the well wishes! It really isn't that bad, as far as sinus infections go; mostly just drying them out, and making everything taste horrible. And of course, my new Peterson Sherlock Holmes Squire Rustic PLIP was just delivered today. Oh well, something great to look forward to.
