That thread is hit and miss for me. Sometimes I post what I'm smoking, other times I dont. Sometimes it seems like 3-4 pages are added by the time I get back to it. I'll normally go a page back. Me hitting the "like" button is more of an acknowledgement that I read it. When going back it also shows me where to pick up from where I left off. Sort of a bookmark for me. ha. That's exactly what it's like for me 95% of the time.

Morning Patchers!! I try to read every post, and I like each and every one of you, which is why I try to do my part by rabble rousing and get some of the guys here together to offer stuff for a raffle to show Sparks that we aren't just a bunch of smokers taking advantage of a good thing, which we are, and the reason for the raffle is to bring all you guys and gals together while showing Sparks that we care enough to support him and his efforts.
Back to the likes button..as I said I like/love each and every one of ya but as I mentioned before this old brain has just fizzled and sputtered, I can't remember to hit the button. I have notes pinned to my laptop, notes laying all about the table, to remind me to "like" the button...just can't remember so...I gave up. Yup, defeat is what it is, but it is small so I don't worry about it. I have enough to do with my devotions in the morning, noon and night...God has given me one more day and I'm not gonna waste it worrying about the damn "like" button.

I am not a "like" button hitter myself.
What Are You Smoking is one of my favorite threads.
One of the services this forum provides is a place to share our enthusiasm with others who will understand and can empathize. Very important, IMO.
But so many are posting in the thread these days that I am always several pages behind. Always. I have to jump ahead to stay current. I do not have the time to check in with the thread often enough to be less than three or four pages behind.
I dunno what to do about it. Indeed, i have likely contributed to the problem.
Its a good kind of problem for a growing website to have. But the result is or can be that posters on WAYS have a more than zero chance of not being seen as often as they post, thus defeating the whole purpose of the thing.
I will mightily try to keep up because it is a lot of fun, but wow, greater minds than mind need to think about what can be done.

I'm not on every day so I usually only go back a couple pages, review and post likes. That's not a slight on anything which happened before hand I missed. It's just the way I roll. I didn't want this practice to be misconstrued and wondered about others' habits as well? I do the same, 10furlongs. I sometimes am gone for a day or two for work or other life things, and when I return it's hard to backtrack through everything that's gone on. I read what I can.

Like I said earlier, I'm too fried out to pay enough attention to the like button. We have a great group of folks here and I'm always mindful of the length and expense that Sparks has put out to keep this little piece of heaven alive and well.
The upcoming raffle is not something I dreamed up to benefit anyone except Sparks himself...and what I mean is he pays all the bills and we need to show our appreciation by helping defray those costs and that is why I suggested a raffle and then a number of members offered their donations. So we are waiting on the exact method of doing this raffle so that we don't give Sparks additional work trying to decipher who paid what and for what. Having a raffle that is cheap enough that everyone can participate in...that is the goal of this exercise. Some are offering tobacco tins and bags, some are offering POY cobs as well as stained cobs, custom tampers and even a custom pipe from Cramps to be offered most likely in the second raffle in about 3 months from the first. Sorry to be longwinded...I'll try to be less so in the future.

In addition, some of us contribute a small amount of $$ to the 'Patch every month through PayPal or other service. Well worth it and painless.

FWIW, I am not a indiscriminate liker. When I am in the WAYS thread, I like all of the posts I read, but tend to only open the thread when I have something that I smoked to add. On the rest of the forum, I hit the like button when I actually, you know, like a post. If I get a chuckle or smile from a post or I agree with the gist of it etc etc, it gets a like. Ya'll should be honored...

Mark & Charlie.....I β like β yβall and the rest of the bunch that make up the Patch. This is the ONLY pipe forum Iβve been a part of where 98% of the members are extremely kind and thoughtful towards others. So, donβt let that 2% destroy a β good thing β!! PS I avoid the chat room on here, on another forum it got out of hand and expressed my opinion in β different tongue β....lol. Well...I'm not really sure where this is coming from Ted? Charlie and I have both been here since the beginning and Justin hasn't kicked either one of our sorry asses off....yet. We may not agree on some things but I couldn't imagine this place without Charlie. He's one of the most knowledgeable people here about pipes, more so than me for sure, even if he is dumb arse about other stuff. Hey now....my wife swears that I am a smartass.... I have all the bases covered, as in the words of the philosopher Dangerfield...'I am an arse man.

I avoid the chat room on here, on another forum it got out of hand and expressed my opinion in β different tongue β....lol. I don't know that you can generalize from other forums in this regard. I kind of like the chat room. A good bunch of regulars, and a good back and forth, with humor, respect, and genuine camaraderie. Much like my experience here in the threads. I have no illusion that we all really are that nice. I think we all deliberately all work at getting along with each other, as one might at a pipe show, or on a cruise ship. We don't try to resolve issues here or fight for king of the hill, (as I am guessing we all do at other times in our lives ). We all want to enjoy what can be enjoyed with each other - the experience of great tobacco, great pipes, great smoking experiences, passing on our experience to newbies (gently) and sharing our enthusiasm. What we get is of gigantic value compared to what we give up, (the winning of arguments). That is my observation anyway.

If I haven't been on in a couple of days, I skip forward in the WAYS thread. I heve turned off "like" notifications for the What are You Smoking section of The Patch. I am notifications driven and not recent threads driven in how I use the site. WAYS likes overwhelm the notification stream. I also rarely hit "like" in WAYS unless something really grabs me about the post. Hitting like for most or all posts in the thread slows down reading of the thread too much for me.
