Are we at the point where a super good sale on scarce tobacco should be communicated via Personal Message? A brief Post heading about availability, then contact via PM for the Seller?
I don't think we need to inform the entire Internet about a great find. What are your thoughts?

I’m fine with giving every pipe smoker here on the Patch the chance to purchase a tobacco they’ve been looking for that’s now available........even in limited quantities.

Well, yes. Lurkers, profiteers, non members etc. Why let them deplete a limited stock? Announcement is Posted and fellow members PM for the Seller/ and or a lock out page that can only be viewed by registered members.

It won't make a hill of beans, though, because Facebook and the other forums. I lurk on another prominent forum, and they have the news just as fast as us. |

That’s a great idea for Patch members, but if you have a lot of pipe buddies on here that would take MANY PM’s.
I understand your point, but those “ rare “ tobacco’s are usually posted on most of the other pipe forums.
I was invited by a member here....will not mention who....to join another pipe forum. I just wanted to see what this forum was all about......you can NOT read any posts without registering. Personally, that’s going to far!!! This pipe forum was set up and is operated by Lane....STG.
Banning lurkers is not a good idea, eventually many join👍

These forums are capable of private sub-forums, where even a regular forum member would have to sign into and be approved. That would be (IMO) the best way

 The blends that evaporate quickly are going to evaporate quickly regardless of what is reported here.... the patch is still a pretty small patch in the scope of it all. Most every batch of hard to get tobacco is gone by the time I ever see a thread announcement.... unless you are constantly on the computer, chances are you will miss out... more likely dumb luck on timing to get them blends. |

This is what I basically stated and I agree with Charlie. It’s a great idea to have a sub-forum for members only. But those “ rare “ tobacco’s are also well advertised and spread by Instagram members faster than lightning.
Also.....telephone, telegraph and tellawoman.....I had to add that.....lol

Most of the forums have "members only" sections that are not visible to lurkers. That makes the most sense to me. Some forums also have "donors only" sections.

Mike, we have a number of members here on the Patch with 0 to 5 posts. Some have been a member here on the Patch for over a year.
So, I’m sorry to say we have a number of “ registered lurkers “. My guess is either good intentions of just reading what’s going on here on the Patch....or....other objectives....honestly not sure which.

Word about a scarce tobacco becoming available or a super good sale happening is going to spread like wildfire no matter what restrictions this forum activates. There are so many forums and social media pages announcing the same alerts posted here.
I'm not against a member-only section.
So long as we understand it's not going to do a thing to increase our chances of getting the fast selling hard-to-get blends.
Just know that posting some of the more appealing stuff in a private sub-forum may give visitors and lurkers fewer reasons to come here. That's not necessarily 100% a good thing.

Over this past year at The Patch I have acted on several posts that lead to Unicorn purchases... fast action and a bit o luck I'm sure. Like Lotto, if you don't play you can't win.
I also think it might be that more and more net surfers are hip to the webtailers "Email Notification" system, so get a first come first served heads-up that whittles down the stock a good deal before the public whistle blows.

I'm pretty sure I have the buy, sell, trade section open to only those that have the appropriate post count. Meaning, not only can they not post there, but they can't even see it.

A restricted page is a nice thought, but rare tobaccos becoming available is like a scent pipers pick up fast. Probably would not do any good.

Agreed there are other forums making similar announcements. If there is something you want, best to rely on the retailer to send you a message when it is available rather then rely on the forum. |
