I use a notepad to keep track of everything. I recently went through my whole "cellar" and took inventory.
I have the jars labeled with month and year. If there are multiple jars with the same dates they get labeled as 1, 2, 3, etc. In my notepad I write down the company, the name of the blend, tin or bulk, date and jar number. If I pull one out, I cross it off the list.

A walk-in closet works for me. No lists, spreadsheets, as my tobacco's talk to me: "Try Me"! "Me Next"!

I guess my technique is most like LSU's. I built a little cabinet with kinda french doors, and I just stare into it and pick what I want. Like the fridge, I don't keep an inventory, I buy and put in, take out and smoke.
Yes a couple of times when ordering something I threw in a tin or two that I thought I was close to running out of, only to find i wasn't, but in general my system works.
I do so many spread sheets for work, I am kind of glad I don't have to for this. I am a little jealous of those who do however.
I long to be organized.

I've been accumulating fountain pens, ink, and pen related stuff for right at 20 years. I have somewhere around 300 pens of varying values and condition. I really wish that I had been more organized about the accumulation as it will take a fair amount of effort to get it all organized to sell once the notion strikes; and it will strike before too much longer. I decided when starting down the pipe smoking road again, I would not make the same mistake as with the pens. I've kept a spreadsheet from day one with the data on pipes, tobacco, and accessories to help me know how much I've spent, what I've spent it on, and the status of my cellar. It is also a handy place for tabs that tell other stories. So all my pipe information in one place that is kept on the computer and in the cloud for back up.
It is interesting to know just how much I've "invested"; I would have underestimated the total by a quite a bit. At least my kids will have an idea as to the value of the accumulation should I pass from this mortal coil. Hopefully my wife won't see it until that same time, although she has a fair idea!

I saw where someone calculated how much tobacco he smoked in a week, and then using such a spread sheet he calculated and kept track of how many weeks he could smoke if it became suddenly illegal to buy tobacco. As I recall in his case it was several years.

As I recall in his case it was several years. H'mmm, I may be that guy. At least my Pipe & Tobacco spending spreadsheet has such a tobacco consumption model. Because I keep track of what's in my cellar, including weights in ounces, it is a simple calculation to determine how many years of tobacco smoking I have stocked up. It is, of course, just an estimate as there are more than a few variables to consider. One key variable is how much tobacco is in one smoke. My model allows for any change in that number to flow through all the calculations. I'm currently using 2.5g/bowl, which is right at .09oz. FWIW, at two pipes per day, five days a week, my nearly 60 pounds in the cellar will last 20.5 years. Change that per bowl weight to 3g and it drops to 17.5 years. The lack of precision doesn't bother me as it is all just for fun (heavy emphasis on the fun) and getting a rough goal on what to put back in the cellar. Plus, I just like to play with spreadsheets.

I have no idea what I have. I smoke it if I find it! Basically what I do. I have everything out on a book shelf with labels facing out. So, I look for something that will match the mood i'm in and go from there.

I loaded all my cellar onto The Pipe Tool. Takes a little time but the platform is easy to manage. I had way more than I thought. 102 lbs and counting...eeeeeesh.

I did sign-up and they ask a lot of identifying information they shouldn't need for a tobacco management service. Hopefully they don't sell user data. All mine was intentionally incorrect as per my usual with online signups.

Wow. That is what I mean. And a pie chart to boot.
