Greetings all, first post here. I have a couple dozen pipes that I've recently inherited, and I'm looking to sell a couple of them to help with some bills. I realize I'll need >100 posts in order to advertise here, so I won't do that, but I wonder if I could ask for an estimate of worth for a particular pipe? The pipe is a Larsen Super Copenhagen 107, made in 1963. It is an estate pipe, but has been very well cared for. I haven't even smoked out of it. Any and all comments appreciated!

Welcome. I'm sure you'll find a rough estimate here.
If you decide to smoke some of the inherited pipes, hang around and join the fun to be had at the briar patch.

I'm not going to venture a guess, since pipes are worth what somebody will pay for them.
But I would say that, if the other pipes are as nice as this one, they should fetch a fair bit.
My recommendation would be to use your next 96 posts researching pipes here on the forum and making friends so that, when you hit 100 posts, you're ready to rock and roll...
...or not...
...You might just decide you want to keep your pipes and perhaps even start calling them "My Precious" like the rest of us call do.

Call Smokingpipes, they will arrange it for you to sell them for an agreed upon price, if it doesnāt appeal to you they will return them.

Warm welcome from the San Francisco Bay, jeffe ! Estimating a pipe's worth based on a photo is a fool's errand... but sometimes I play the fool! I purchased a similar pipe at a local Brick and Mortar store two years ago (same maker and quality designation.) I happily paid $125.00 for it. Danish freehands don't seem to command the prices they did in the '60s and '70s (adjusted for inflation,) but I still love them.

I believe someone already mentioned. Call Smokingpipes. They sell estates. They'll happily give you an estimate but you probably need to send it to them.

...why not browse this page to get an idea of what smokingpipes.com is selling similar pipes for? If you sell to them, you might get about half of it's true worth.. they have to make money on it... www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/denmark/

For appraisals I usually recommend looking at completed listings on eBay but IMO you got as good an answer you're going to get without showing the pipe around Chicago on your PM.com thread. IMO dmcmtk is as close to an early danish/dan/reformed expert as you'll find on the pipe boards and he seems like a really good guy.

Welcome to the Patch!! A few years ago, before pipe prices on eBay started picking up, one could probably acquire a similar pipe between 30-60 dollars(not including shipping). Taking a glance through eBay (advanced settings..sold and completed items options) examining similar pipes (I could not find an exact match), I found a range of prices, most falling between ~50-150 (not including shipping). Keep in mind, the search was a quick general one with a few pipes selling outside the range mentioned. It would be wise to check eBay again, using the advanced features, to carry out a more careful and thorough investigation. If you wish obtain a more accurate appraisal, there are a few webpages like www.worthpoint.com that keep an eye on eBay auctions and other sources that should prove more helpful. Worthpoint has a free trial period and costs ~20 a month after. Smokingpipes, as mentioned, is another option.

I've heard nothing but good things about Dave, but he stopped replying to PM, so in fact I never have had any solid answers from anyone on the Larsen, aside from that it's rare. The people on the other board seem great, but the software is awful clunky -- this place seems to run a bit smoother. Cheers

Howdy Jeffee, If that pipe was made in 1963, then you have a very early Larsen. Those pipes have outstanding pedigrees because founder Ole Larsen began having pipes made by some of the world's best known Danish pipe makers in the 1960's. It is always fun to speculate on who might have made a particular Larsen because the carver's name was never on the nomenclature. You'll find a great history lesson on the brand and the names of some of the famous Larsen pipe makers here - pipedia.org/wiki/W.%C3%98._LarsenAn estimate of value is rather difficult when only going by photos, but it has been my experience as a re-seller, that pipes like the one that you have will sell in the $100-$300 price range, if in really good condition. I know that's quite a spread in value, but size, condition and desirability are all determining factors. Hope this info helps, Pipestud

As a refurb / estate guy, I agree whole heartedly that a pipe is what someone is willing to pay for it. IMHO, this pipe is rare and special enough to let the market determine the price. You could for instance list on ebay for $150...and it would likely get snatched up quick. But starting the price on a pipe like this at a lower point (which simply draws more attention) will have a number of bidders sending it to the appropriate winning price.

You could for instance list on ebay for $150...and it would likely get snatched up quick. But starting the price on a pipe like this at a lower point (which simply draws more attention) will have a number of bidders sending it to the appropriate winning price. With all respect to the others, here is the rub to what is being said. If you do not have good solid eBay pipe selling (to a lesser degree buying) experience (How to take pictures, describe and generally set up your auction etc. ) and are not known & respected (Allot of solid positive feedback and a number of years selling pipes etc.) by the pipe buying community, your pipe might not fetch what the above folks are saying, perhaps falling into the range I mentioned. In the past, I bid on many pipes and won a number of the same grade, type & make of pipes as the star sellers at a fraction of their auctions' end price. Was this more risky? Maybe, but that was mitigated by careful questions, asking for extra pictures, eBay protection, setting price goals and the like. Out of the hundreds of pipes won, rarely did I have to return a pipe or have any real issues and saved allot compared to buying exclusively from given pipe sellers (A purchase is not about the seller but my price margins for a pipe's given condition, size, desirability etc. . ).So my perspective comes from buying from all kinds of pipe sellers, where the big deals can be found (This has become more difficult over the last number of years with knowledge and interest expanding.). My opinion is if you wish to comfortably score in the range pipestud stated, I would strongly recommend going with a well known and well thought of eBay seller. A seller's fee can cost more than eBay fees would, but the seller takes care of everything and sends you a check, minus their charge, at auction's end. If you do this on your own, you will probably fetch a lower price; Look through the past & present Larsen Super auctions (The closer you get to the pipe line and/or your specific pipe the better.) from every seller and see how the price can vary. PS As mentioned in my last post, I did a quick look around and tried to capture a range of Larsen super pipe prices between the margins. This was very far from being a real appraisal though telling as to how wildly prices can vary on eBay. A proper thorough search might prove helpful in leading you to a more well rounded understanding of the current market as well as reading the more experienced opinions here. This particular line I was not really fond of nor would I claim any expertise.
