As I have mentioned I collected a bunch of pipes 10 - 12 years ago and then quit smoking pipes. I have recently decided to sell all my stuff but before I do I want to pick a few of my pipes to keep for an occasional smoke. Legend Lover told me to post my pipes and you guys could help me learn to appreciate which ones might be good with certain types of tobacco and to help me in general to decide what to sell and what to keep.
I am also curious to know if I might have any gems that I am too green to know about
I do have one mystery that I hope someone can help me solve. You see the entry for the Butz-Choquin second .... I can't find that one! But you will also see an entry for a French Briar Canadian shape, I don't know where it came from and it has no other marking? Could they be the same? I guess I should figure out how to post pictures.

I think pictures will help. Go to the how to section and you'll see a thread with some options.

...you should keep the ones you like, no matter the make or model... however, based on your list, I'd recommend the following...

...my opinion... I've only been smoking pipes for 48 years. Others may point out items on your list that I am not aware of. Best of luck.

At the same time, I'd keep a Missouri Meerschaum cob around. You won't get much by selling it anyway and they're great to have, IMO.

48 years? You're telling me you started smoking when you were 2?

I never would have guessed that! By the time I'm 71, if I get that far, I'm going to be old, wrinkled and ornery as can be.
On topic though, nice line up of pipes. If it was me, I'd keep them all.

Here are a couple images of the unknown French Briar. A couple distinguishing characteristics are the step in the rim and the blank panel on the bottom near the stem.

...crap. I'd keep that one... That made me laugh out loud because virtually every pipe I look at, as I am trying to narrow it down to 4 or 5 to keep, I think "crap, I wanna keep that one"

You may end up keeping all your pipes... And if you don't, in a few months you'll be back up to 40+ pipes. 😉

As I said, I am a guy who loves to fix things up and I will often spend an hour fixing something that I could go to the store and replace for $1. It's just the therapy of standing back and looking at something and saying "hmmmm, that looks good, and it was fun" Sorry, I hadn't cleaned up the stem yet.

You should hang onto the ones you like, regardless of name. If you had to throw away (could not sell) all but 5 pipes...which 5 would you not be able to pitch? Keep those 5. My .02.

Does anyone see any pipes they can comment on as far as smoking characteristics or quality?

Names don't matter, looks don't matter, condition don't matter you got to smoke each one to find out if it is keeper or not.

The Savinelli 320 should smoke very well. Nice and cool. Both of my 320s are reliable smokes and amongst my favorites for English and Balkan blends. With or without the balsa filters. Good either way.

Does anyone see any pipes they can comment on as far as smoking characteristics or quality? Personally, I'm not a fan of stinger pipes, though I have a few. I just don't like the restricted draw, and.mine tend to gurgle - even though the stinger contraption makes that easier to address.

Toss everything except blasted pipes and focus on pre '68 Shell and Bruyere series Dunhill and pre '85 Edwards . Don't need anything else

Just my 2 cents, bottom line if it smokes well or above, Keep It! If it don't, Get rid of It! No matter who made it.

...crap. I'd keep that one... I agree. That step in the rim is indicative of old pipes that were sold as pipes that could be smoked while driving. It's a nice pipe.

I have to agree with most here that if it smokes well keep it if not send it on it's way. Some of my best smoking pipes are no name, Grabows, Kaywoodies and cobs. I have a couple known name pipes that don't smoke well but I try them once in a while because I'm kind of new to this and my technique is getting better as I go so it might not be the pipe just yet.

Keep the 3 you like most.
But basing things solely on your list:
I'd keep the Peterson system, one Missouri Meer Cob, and one Kaywoodie.

And this should go without saying, a pipe that doesn't smoke well for you might just smoke very well for someone else. Sometimes it's just technique, tobacco and or even climate that changes how a pipe will smoke, not necessarily the pipe itself.
