When I got it I did some research and I wrote in my notes that it was a "Turkish meerschaum oil bath billiard". That was a long time ago and I don't remember if I ate breakfast today. Its colors are beautiful in an ugly sort of way. Any input?

I'm absolutely no help on the information you're looking for... but, it is a great looking pipe.

It looks like you've persevered with the pipes longer than I had imagined.
Sorry I can't be of any help in identifying the pipe.

I certainly didn't give it that awesome patina if that's what you mean I bought it on Ebay and cleaned it up, there is just something very cool about meerschaum to me, especially when you read that they find it floating in the sea in Turkey.
Of all my pipes, only two were purchased new, the rest were projects

The deeper it's mined from, the higher the quality of the Meerschaum. The better Meerschaum comes from at least 300 feet down in Eskesehar, Turkey. These mine tunnels are narrow hand carved things that people actually crawl down to retrieve the Meer. I saw a film on it once on Youtube. It's a fascinating process.

I'm not sure what oils bath means. Someone else on the patch might. They usually coat the pipes in Beeswax to finish them off. If that's natural patina, it's got a bit of age to it. I say IF as the patina on it is quite regular, so it may have been stained for effect. In either case, it's a beautiful pipe.

I have one exactly like that except it has the orangey swirl stem with CAO in a gold metal button on the stem...could be a CAO from the 80's...some had the CAO button and some did not...either way they are great smokers...got mine in a junk shop...woman said it was a dirty wooden pipe (dark color came from use) only cost $1.35.

I think it's beautiful. Looks like the burst on an old Gibson Les Paul.

I suspect you are correct about the staining because while the rim is solid black it still has crisp sharp edges. I don't remember where I found the "oil bath" reference.

I think mine has had the stem tenon replaced as it has a metal insert in the shank.

Looks like one of those pressed meer pipes CAO and Peterson used to sell. They were not made from solid block Meershcaum, rather from meer shavings molded to the shapes and then "aged" .

I found this pipe for sale on line listed as a CAO Meerschaum. It looks 100% identical. Other than the coloring
