Do not seem to go together well....
I really do not like social media (FB), but I figured it was a necessary evil in getting the word out to let others in our geographical area know that we exist. I have been posting on:
Gentleman's pipe smoking forum
Corn cob nation
And Nasal snuff takers
Under the "Event's"tab for at least the last year, on CCN, and GPPSS, to announce meetings subject to their approval...and they have always approved it. After my last post on CCN And NST, I was notified by both that my post was deleted because it:
Nevermind the fact that in the case of nasal snuff takers, I let them know that there are snuff aficionado's in the pipe club. One club member opined in a text that it might be because I now post with an official logo (I think he is on to something)...never mind the fact we are not a commercial enterprise, extract no dues, never will...just supporting the hobby and welcoming others in. They allow all kinds of other upcoming events to be promoted......
On the GPSS, I posted the article about Disneyland banning the smoking areas, and was quickly called an asshat for posting the story, and suggesting that I do not care about the children by another poster...never mind the fact that the rules of conduct claim to not allow personal attacks...but in this case, I guess they are allowed.
I just find it weird that Social media sites that supposedly exist to bring the community together, preclude those that attempt to do so...I guess monetary exchange would smooth things over. I do not post this as a gripe, just it is what it is...they certainly have a right to instill whatever policies they want on their club page, but it all seems counterproductive to what the state goals are.
All in all, it will be less work to get the word out.

Big difference between clubs (you) and cliques (them). That pretty much sums it up...I would only add "us"...our club is not cliquish in any regard.

That's insane news to report, Charlie.
All I can say is this: Trailboss is the best ambassador for this community (whether pipe, or snuff, or etc.) that I have ever met.
We have a logo. We have a manufacturer that sends us pipe tobacco for reviews. We have a social media presence. We have a home at Big Sticks in Mesa, AZ.
Our pipe club is awesome, and it's largely due to the efforts of Trailboss. If more folks would ask "Why not?" instead of "Why?", we'd all be further along. I don't know who is making decisions at those other sites, but, congrats, you triggered the "FAIL" alert.
Oh, as for the children, smoking's the least of their worries in the 21st Century.

Sorry to hear this Charlie, FB was the perfect “ network “ for spreading your pertinent information to those interested.
As for me, this forum is the “ only “ form of social media for me. When I lived up North I used FB to keep in touch with family. I set FB up so only family members had access to communicate with me, not even old friends looking for me....definitely not from the type of career I retired from. I still found FB way to intrusive. If you didn’t set up FB originally in the manner of “ your choice “, FB automatically sent everyone that’s part of your email address book an email letting them know “ your now on FB “! Let’s just say social media sites is not “ my cup of tea “!!!
PS My FB account was permanently deleted when I moved down “ heir “👍

I wonder is there anything in the fact that there is effort to sign up to a forum and post etc.
In Facebook groups, it's easier to join and participate when it suits.
So the people that join here do so for a reason.
And some of the people that like a Facebook group aren't necessarily aficionados. Couple that with the popularity of Facebook and there is a larger number of people who have liked a Facebook group but aren't 'all in', for want of a better word, but are happy to pounce on someone when they post something that they don't like.
Maybe not...

I'm a millennial, but currently find myself disenchanted with Facebook. I use it mainly to keep in touch with my friends back home. I find myself often unfollowing/ignoring people who constantly post political/religious/whatever stuff, because that's not what I'm there for. I've gotten into a few Facebook "discussions" (read: arguments) and its a no win scenario.

There is a pipe group on Facebook called "Pipe Smokers Club (tobacco only)" that isn't bad. They have around 11k members and folks comment from all over the world. Like all Facebook groups, tensions do flare and people get pissy, which is why I much prefer a forum.
I am also planning to rid myself of Facebook this year. I use it to keep in touch with family and friends, but the Facebook privacy practices are godawful.

I’ve no use for FB - one less thing to get me in trouble or waste my time on. We know the world has gone crazy and lives in a perpetual state of hypocrisy which social media just seems to be a magnifying force for.
That being said, it’s too bad because people would find “us” through it.
At least we still have The Patch! And thankful for it.

Thanks for the kind words, Dan.
I agree about the horrible practices of FB regarding privacy, I hardly ever use it on a personal basis, and at some point will probably delete my account.
What a lot of young people do not get, or maybe don’t care, is that prospective employers access a lot of info about a prospective employee.

I don't go by my real name on FB, and have it totally locked down. Only Friends see my posts, and I don't post anything political, or controversial. I hate Social Media, but I like to keep in touch with people I care about, and see what they post about their lives. It's also pretty much a requirement if I want to sell pipes.

Let's advertise The Patch on FB! We do have a Facebook page... www.facebook.com/thebriarpatchforumSeems like it's not been used much. I'm kinda glad in one way though. I was a member of a Royal Python forum when I had my snake. The place is a desert now because everyone went to Facebook. The discussions were happening there and not in the forum, to the point that there have been no posts in the last few years. I'd hate something like that to happen here.

Let's advertise The Patch on FB! NO.Please...No Facebook...other than my wife, 4 or 5 friends and the Patch, I have no use for social media, cause I'm not social...pretty much have all the friends I need/want....they are true friends and like Patch members are what I consider family. Keeps me as occupied as I want and being old, am loosing friends so much faster than I want. The Patch is as close to social media as I want to be...folks here are friendly and are truthful...and trust is something that is earned...folks here are trustworthy in my opinion and that is why I push for folks to get together on raffles, auctions, whatever keeps us together. I've noticed that the folks here are people I recall from other forums that dissolved into backbiting and nastiness...so glad that it hasn't happened here. I think the mods have done a wonderful job of keeping us on track...good people all...and perhaps most importantly, Thank You, Sparks for bringing us together.

Maybe we congratulate ourselves too much, but The Briarpatch is a unique place: We are respectful and kind to each other. We are generous and caring. We look out for each other.
There is precious little of that kind of thing in the world today. Well worth celebrating whenever the moment presents itself.

I'm a pretty quiet social media junky I've got way more FB groups and likes than friends.(sadly)I eat sleep breath this hobby, my life kinda revolves around pipe collecting. I keep an eye on most of the pipe related sites and as much as I hate how intrusive FB is that's where the action is. 90% of what I see doesn't interest me and I've learned how to not see a lot of posts but I see more incredible pipes that I have a real interest in and I can connect with my fellow collectors, many that I've known personally for years there. A couple of days ago a guy was asking a FB group about my "dream pipe" with picture that he inherited from a relative that I can get out of my head. You just don't see that stuff on the pipe boards anymore.

The Patch facebook page is innocuous in that it gives an avenue to lead people to the patch, but I agree with you...on another forum that I belong to is a closed forum to prevent trolls and spammers, they decided to open a Facebook page thinking that they could keep it private for members...the People that really like Facebook started doing all their posting on FB instead of the forum, and the people that wanted nothing to do with FB felt left out.

This is social media and is the price you agreed pay to play here when you joined is your information. Everything you disclose here is data mined and useful to someone and is for sale. The fact that you like to talk loud is probably noted as part of the data process and has a value.
