One of my top 10 American makers is this wonderfully craggy pipe by Michael Butera, keeping it smokey with some Dunhill Dark Flake, what makers are in your top 10 American makers? banjo

Good to see you back, Banjo. I've gotta agree with the above and add Robert Perkins into the mix too.

The only one I have had the pleasure of smoking was made by Michael Addis. I love that pipe and the way it smokes.
Good to see you Banjo!

Is Jose rubio American? Certainly his name didn't sound American, but neither does my name sound Irish.

Missouri Meerschaum, they make great smoking pipes anyone can afford.
As for artisan carvers, all of the names mentioned are in that class, the only American artisan pipe I have is a Don Warren freehand with nice plateau, looks and smokes beautifully.

I've always liked Mark Tinsky's work and have recently been VERY impressed by our own Cramptholomew's skills.

Neglected to include our own Cramps, but yes, he certainly rates in my top ten for sure.

Sorry , can't are any input to thus thought. The closest pipe to an artisan I have bought and smoked was from, CAO, SMS or PAYROC Meers don't know when or if I ever will.
Now you list is missing Scotty Persel and her husband.

I could list some makers I have seen that I like the look of but without smoking them a true opinion I have not. The only one I have smoked is from Cramptholomew. I think it looks amazing and smokes great with the right tobacco. Because of its height, I find it best with a dryer blend or one I have taken the time to dry out well and with that height also comes a good long smoke. It's become more of my thinking pipe or when I'm watching a movie. Side story to the pipe, the last time Cramptholomew and I got together for a pipe night he was looking over the pipe and criticising it, as any artist would do to their creations. I had to remind him that it was made before he even made a handful of pipes so what he knows and can do now is more than what we could do then.

Don Warren is a member of the Albuquerque pipe club. We get to see some of his new stuff before it goes out. Very nice pipes. 🙂

I'm very lucky to have 3 outstanding pipe makers in our pipe club. Dan Chlebove of Gabrieli Pipes, Jason Zeiner and Juan Urquiza of JP Urquiza Pipes. I own pieces from all of them and they are world class smokers. I'll also add another Pa maker- Clark Layton. I have a strawberry wood pipe from Clark that is a work of art.

Thanks so much, Legend Lover and Cramptholomew. You both made my day. I even had to brag to my wife that I made y'all's Top 10 list. (I think she was even a little proud of me.) For my own list, I wouldn't even know where to begin. However, there were a few guys who were big influences on me when I first got into pipe making. Probably my number one guy is Kurt Huhn, who used to run Pipemakersforum. I'm not sure what Kurt is up to these days, because I don't see him around much anymore. But a big part of my pipe making skills were things that I learned from Kurt. I was also a huge fan of Rad Davis, who made some spectacular pipes, as I'm sure many of you know. And the cool think about Rad is that, in spite of his huge talent and world renown, he was super generous with his knowledge. If you had a question, he always had a really good answer for you. I have also been a huge fan of Todd Bannard (Sasquatch). Sure, he's technically Canadian, but I consider him an American, anyway, because he lives in North America. Todd and I both started out about the same time, but I've always been an admirer of his pipe making journey, and he's really a straight-up good guy. Some of my other favorites, in no particular order, are Jeffrey Gracik, Brian Ruthenberg, Steve Norse, Wayne Teipen, Brad Pohlmann, Trever Talbert, Tyler Lane Beard, Bruce Weaver ... Oh wait a minute, I think I went past 10. Yeah, I could just go on and on. Lots of really great pipe makers around.

They look exceptionally classic, even if the shape isn't truly traditiinal, but never ever boring. You need to up your prices. I sincerely think you're playing in big dog territory. Plus, that leather rustication of yours is the sh!t. I don't even want to call it rustication, it's "professionally textured".

Many great carvers, one of my favorites is Randy Wiley. Why? His pipes are reasonably priced, good smokers, oil cured, nicely done and tend to favor freehand forms. Randy has also been in the business a long time and is pleasant to converse with, very down to earth.

Speaking of pipe makers, I don't remember the last time I saw a carver making as much progress as you have been making as quickly as you've been going with it. You have been doing so well, and I see great things in your future.
