I have been on much lately as I am in the middle of the first of two business trips to Europe this month. I spent my free Saturday wandering around Paris today. I made sure to visit a pipe shop called A La Pipe du Nord. I wanted to go there when I was here last year, but the shop was closed on Sunday which was my only free day here last year. If you ever get to Paris, I recommend a visit to this shop. The shop has a very nice selection of pipes. They only have pipes and accessories. No tobacco. Main floor plus some in the basement. They also have a smoking room upstairs which the owner offered if I wanted to smoke my new pipe right away. I passed as I needed to get back to the hotel to meet up with my cigar smoking manager to go to dinner. The woman who owns the shop was very helpful. She let me browse in peace for a bit after greeting me. Then, she asked me about what types of pipes that I like. She then pulled some candidates out. There was a nice straight grain Butz Choquin group 3 Billiard, but I’ve had a bad experience with BC before. The one I have is like sucking on a thick milkshake through a narrow straw and it needs constant relights for the first half of the bowl. I’ve opened up the draw on a lot of pipes, but never was successful with that one. I also didn’t like the slot work on the BC she showed me. I considered a petite Chacom Billiard, but the grain just didn’t grab me. I’d guess that she had at least 400 or 500 pipes on display. I ended up buying a petite group 1 to 2 size Pierre Morel Freehand with Horn shank extension. Pierre is a French pipe carver. So, a perfect souvenir of this trip to France. pipedia.org/wiki/MorelThe pics aren’t the greatest, but here they are:

Here's info on the shop. The owner told me that the website is greatly out of date though.

Nice pipe! I've been eyeballing BCs lately.
Glad to hear there's a good pipe shop in Paris.

Congrats & Enjoy. Glad you had the time on this trip to experience some Parisian pipe culture ( my impression is that it is somewhat limited). My Butz Choquin pipes have performed better for me. 2 BC's designed by Pierre Morel.

I have been on much lately as I am in the middle of the first of two business trips to Europe this month. Meant to say "I haven't been on much lately" I blame jet lag and not the French wine from lunch or the beer from dinner. 🤪

Very nice...a fine looking pipe with great lines, fine plateau rim, also...why no tobacco? Are prices there so much greater that tobacco is something that is not worth having in the shop?

I don't have any French pipes (except a Divonne, which I guess is a basket pipe), but they often have appealing aesthetics. Been looking at Chacom, too. I read that they and BC make a lot of pipes for Rattray's which also have really appealing designs to my eye. I haven't been to Paris in probably 10 years, and didn't smoke a pipe then. Next trip, though...!

When you consider the amount of pipes manufactured in France, you'd. think pipe culture would be more prevalent.

It was a good move to make a purchase from the shop. I note in passing, that you picked the most Danish looking pipe on hand.

Beautiful pipe John, enjoy for many years of smoking pleasure 👌👍👍
What era was the pipe made?
I own two Pierre Morel Sr. pipes, both superb smokers and look like Museum pieces. There is a Jr. as well, also an excellent pipe maker/carver. Sr. I believe passed away in 1976, if I’m not mistaken. Bruno Nuttens, a pipe maker that sells on eBay is good friends with Jr. If you have any questions of the time period Jr. would know. Bruno would forward your question to Jr.
Pierre Morel Sr was a Master Sculptor as well, his work is on display at the Museum in France.

It must be Jr. as the shop owner said he "is" a famous pipe maker and not "was". Also, the pipe does not look 40+ years old to me.

Nice looking pipe, and 400-550 pipes to look at, not a shabby selection.
If you take a leak in a urinal, and some guy starts brushing the back of your coat while doing so, that is a cue to tip the bathroom guy for keeping you spiffy. My uncle understood the custom and had the appropriate tip.... his wife figured the gal handing out the paper towels in the women's restroom wanted a tip not knowing the exchange rate went to her husband to confer...the woman came from the restroom calling her a #%&*#! and throwing coins at her.

I wonder why that is the case? I didn’t ask, but am guessing maybe no desire to get a license.
