It's late at night everyone else is asleep and I've been sitting around thinking about pipe smoking forums. It was about 20 years ago now that I wandered on to something called The Pipes Digest. That led to Pipes.org and a news group called ASP.All of those are pretty much on life support these days.I think the Digest has been inactive for some years. As things are though several pipe smokers forums have appeared on line in the past years. Some of them though have very little activity.I read most of them, and post on a few of them. Some of then only now and then So as you can see I have a history with pipe smoking forums.I guess I just like conversing with other pipe smokers. That's why I'm here.I guess that's why we're all here.

Seems like most the big forums eventually splinter off.
I think too many of them try to appease everyone, which isn't feasible. Ends up making the board dull and vanilla. I think a good forum should have a bit of character, not these bland faceless places.

I too have been a member of many pipe forums, some that have gone by the way side and some that are still around obviously. I've found little of them to interest me, mostly because of the many inflated egos and trolls that have been with them since there beginning. I come to a forum to enjoy conversation about pipes and the smoking of them and maybe even be of help when I can but, not to have to worry what I may say to be open for an attack from some depraved coward that has neither respect for himself or others and only enjoys trying to humiliate people from the other side of his monitor he's hiding behind. Thankfully two out of the now 3 I belong to haven't these people or they choose not to confront me. One forum does still have one that from time to time rears his ugly head but, thankfully I'm able to ignore him without much trouble and the other members can see what he is and do the same. I've only been here maybe 24 hours but, it seems like a nice place to be a part of, I reckon only time will tell. I do understand many have much different out looks and interests that to me maybe boring or just not to my liking, so I just find my niche and settle in.

I read about my first pipe board from Bob Hamlin in the Ephemeris back about 1987 or '88. Back then I think it was the called The Jesters. There were a few others early on that came and went but I always had them delivered as a daily digest. Things got busy on pipe boards in the mid to late 90's with AOL when you could just point and click. IRC chat rooms were a lot of fun with many of the top collectors and carvers participating pretty much every night. I didn't think twice about downloads (if they didn't get dropped) taking hours, we'd do it at night when we didn't use the phone. Now I'm ready to throw my computer (that cost a fraction of our first one) against the wall if it takes longer than a blink to do anything.
