First I apologize if I am failing to figure out how to use the search function, I can't seem to ever find something which I assume has been discussed many times?
My question is whether to keep tinned tobacco in it's original tin once opened or transfer it to a jar? I noticed that after 10 or 12 years of not touching my tobacco that some tins, even unopened ones, dried out just a bit.
Jars are cheap.

Most people jar after opening a tin (or anything really). Many often keep sealed tins as they are and, again, jar when opening.
I have kept my tinned tobacco in the tin after opening and it's not made any difference to the tobacco, but ambient temperature and humidity play a BIG part in the process...hence, jarring is more beneficial.

Jars are always gonna make you happy...some tins are better than others, those of us who have tins of McClelland tobacco, tend to keep them in the tins in case of resale, as they pull more $$ if they are still in the original tin. If you aren't planning on selling, then jars would be the way to go...they can age in a jar just as well as in a tin (assuming the tin is if quality and not paper with a liner of spray foil).

One thing to note...you mention about jarring once opening; however, square tins are probably best jarred once obtaining them as they don't seem to hold their seal as well as the circular tins.

Have to agree with everything Paddy said. Best way to go.

I keep tinned tobacco in their tins. Bulk tobaccos go into Ball jars for long term storage and bail top jars for those I dip into frequently.

It's a cost/benefit question IMHO. While I don't question jarring tinned tobacco as there's no way to go wrong, I simply doubt the utility or benefit and disagree with the practice in general.

I can honestly say that I wish I had jarred all of my tins 10 years ago when I put everything away. A few weeks ago when I decided to look at everything with the intent of selling it, all the jarred stuff was fine and the tinned stuff was dry. Depending on the type of tin, the dryness varied. The square tins and the round 2 ounce tins with plastic lids were pretty dry, the round tins with a rubber seal and screw on lid were okay.
Because I have a lot of free time on my hands, and I love to tinker, it was not a problem to re hydrate the dry stuff but it would certainly have been less time if I had jarred it all. I love learning!
Off to buy more jars! ...... because I bought more tobacco!

Off to buy more jars! ...... because I bought more tobacco! We got'em! lol I will admit that you good people have had a hand in the destruction! A couple weeks ago I stumbled across all my pipes and tobacco and decided I was going to sell it all. But when I started looking at the pipes and trying to understand what they might be worth, I remembered what made me fall in love with pipes to begin with. I was absolutely convinced that I would keep 3-5 pipes and a few ounces of tobacco. A week ago, was absolutely convinced I would keep 10 - 12 pipes and 20 - 30 ounces of tobacco.
Now I am buying tobacco and looking at pipes on Ebay!

I'm to the point now almost every tin I crack except Solani ABF is in the 7-12 year range or older and I haven't had this experience. They were all fine. Perhaps you should have stored yours differently?

The only time they were exposed to lower RH was in the summer due to air conditioning.

My theory, Leave in Tin if it aint open, if I open a round tin screw on lid I leave it. If I open a square tin I jar it. If I buy bulk in a zip lock bag I jar it. If I buy a Esoterica blend in a bag I leave it....till opened, then jar it. Easy, Peasey, Japanessey!
