I, like everyone else, am intrigued by the calabash. If I understand correctly, the large chamber below the meerschaum acts to cool the smoke?
Before I buy one on Ebay and clean it up, can anyone tell me a bit more about smoking a calabash?

Here you go, watch this video that shows answer all your questions..........enjoy. OMG! That was painful! That is 15 of my life I will never get back! One thing I am not enjoying about this ride is the guys who think we want to watch their 15 minute YouTube video of them smoking, drinking, puffing, breathing, contemplating, puffing some more, breathing some more, staring off into space, puffing some more, contemplating some more, etc. in order to get 30 seconds worth of information is mind numbing.
But .... I did get the answers Thanks!

Cool the smoke? Not so much; the difference in temperature is barely perceptible, if at all. But they are cool for other reasons.

You'll certainly find they smoke much different then the usual pipe, I believe its a more pleasant smoke and it brings out flavors you may not get otherwise. I don't agree that it doesn't cool the smoke but, being that said you won't notice if its getting hot so be careful and keep your cadence down because you could crack the Meer bowl if gotten too hot. Not long a ago I bought a Calabash with just that, 4 cracks to be exact and replaced the Meer bowl as was my intentions when I purchased it. Love to smoke Calabashes when my time permits, always enjoyable. As far as instructions on how to smoke one, I see not the need except for what I already pointed out, just load, light and enjoy.

I have a gourd calabash from the 60's...still have it and use it not all that frequently...just because I have to hold it and be careful with it...not really something that you take away from home.
