Use to be a rock hound myself as a youngster and I still find myself pick'en the dadburn things up when I walk the property (mostly fossil imprints). Haven't had the pleasure of finding gemstones though, I know its gotta be a real kick. And who doesn't like Turquoise?

Very nice Don...I used to collect different rock from around the US when I had my traveling business...still have much of it out on the porch...always found it interesting the things you find in nature...from the lava rock in and around Gallup and Grants, New Mexico and the desert cactus in Arizona...all that I used to load my van with before heading home. Now I just have the memories of those trips, not sure I could make those trips any more.

I hope to be able to keep at it for another decade or two. Approaching 60 years old. Knees and back are still good. Health is decent and I am not too out of shape. I need to work on my cardio more. I am thankful for my health. I don't take it for granted. Life will through you a few curves now and again.

Don, Those are pretty awesome. I hear there is a trail of them going all the way back to Georgia. BTW, How far are you hunting from White Sands Missile Range? I get down there about twice a year and thought it would be cool to go rock hunting. My only real experience with rock hunting was when we took a family vacation in the 60's out to the South West (I was about 8 or so). We went to the Petrified Forrest and I picked up tons of Amethyst, Topaz and of course... petrified wood, etc. It was laying there like a carpet. Didn't know I wasn't supposed to take it until we left.

Nice stones, Don...
I just talked to a buddy out of El Paso, he said the winds are pretty hellish today, Ruidoso, Truth or Consequences, White sands.... the drivers are having a hard time keeping the tires on the ground.. bad here in Maricopa county also.

It was pretty windy heading north yesterday. Saw some rigs getting pushed around near Raton.

I may go back in the fall and really focus on the turquoise. Got these all in about 2 hours. A full day or two should yield much more.

Dang, just 2 hours? The last time I went out looking for anything I spent 3 hours with a metal detector and found an old hose sprayer that my grandpa lost 20 years ago.

I remember the Raton pass very well...some of those areas around Trinidad and between Phoenix and Flagstaff...the Green Valley area had some pretty strong winds. Loved the drive, however, beautiful country...I really miss it, but not the driving...would kill me today to make that trip all in a couple of days.

I love it around Raton all,the way up to Trinidad. Trinidad is so picturesque and very classic west in style. I also love Las Vegas and Hatch, NM and even have come to be fond of Deming, Lordsburg and Hachita. The last three and maybe Hatch as well, are not pretty to look at, but have some really great people. New Mexican quisine is my favorite food out of anything you can find on Earth.

Learning the geomorphology of a region helps a great deal. Then online research and Google Earth plus field guides gives you a great head start. It can still take hours or days in an area to figure out where the good stuff is and possibly where it came from before erosion moved it over time. Sometimes you just strike out completely.

We don't have any rocks in SE Texas that aren't imported. 600+ feet of alluvial deposits. In Big Bend you walk on bedrock. Further north in the Guadeloupe Mountains you are walking on ancient reefs. However, I can walk on the beach in Galveston and find a shark tooth every few minutes. When you look closely at any patch of earth you can find something interesting.

Can turquoise be cut/carved/shaved into pipe bling? A Turquoise insert between shank and stem would look good.

A piece solid enough and big enough for a trim ring would add considerably to the cost of any pipe. Most of those little nuggets in my pic would bring $15-20. Synthetic or imitation stone would be a better choice for low cost and durablity.
