Now that i have 3 tins of Black XX I thought I would finally crack one and try it.
The rope is black, stoved Virginia that resembles a turd from a dog with an upper GI bleed. The smell reminded me of steak. Cut off a couple of coins and packed loosely and lit up. Straight up it tasted like a greasy steak off a charcoal grill. Same room note from other folks in the lounge. About halfway through the bowl the vitamin N kicks in . . . this is not for the faint of heart. I usually am not affected by nicotine but this one almost makes you drunk. Highly recommend eating a full meal before preferably a 16oz porterhouse steak.
Afterwards I went outside and got some fresh air and sipped a soda to get my bearings back. It was unlike any tobacco I have ever had.

"A greasy steak off a charcoal grill", well now I'll just have to try some! In fact I don't why I haven't tried this already.

I tried Black XX a short time into my pipe smoking journey and it hit me hard. The tin note was my first warning but I pressed forward. Everything you said I feel is spot on. In my early experience it wasn't right for me yet but I also dint totally hate it. After some time and working my way up the scale of tobacco strength I came back to it and found it more pleasing. I wouldn't smoke it often but its a nice thing I throw into a pipe at times as a change of pace. Granted, after a hearty bowl I'm ready to set it aside for a while.

Was this the Sam G or the G&H Black X Twist? I find them different. The G&H is, um, worse. Both'll wipe a smile clean off yer face, though

Better avoid the Brown Rope. It's stronger with a high potency.

Better avoid the Brown Rope. It's stronger with a high potency. Heretic! It scratches the itch...kind of like firing up the Delorean and leaving burning tire tracks.

I picked up 20 tins of this one a few years ago. Char broiled meat on its own, barbecue when mixed 50/50 with ODF. I've yet to get a nic hit from smoking a pipe, but it is a good one, especially in the morning after breakfast with a cup of coffee.

It's one of the few tobaccos that I could care less if I ever smoked again. I WOULD smoke it, but wont be upset if I miss that opportunity
Brown Boogie, on the other hand, is wonderful

I was going to grab a tin or two at the show but Ted warned me about it so I didn't get any. Thanks Ted.

Smoke enough of it and those rabbits will turn into unicorns! That's a two inch deep bowl. Never gotten a nic hit from smoking a pipe and find Black Twist XX mild.

It doesnt help that I inhale once in a while, old habits are hard to break. I pay the price with some blends.
I dont find the XX to be as strong as some blends that I've smoked, but it's up there to me.

I dont find the XX to be as strong as some blends that I've smoked, but it's up there to me. Try mixing it with sweeter Virginias or VaBurs. Newminster Superior Navy Flake is one I like to mix it with along with ODF. Jack Knife plug is another that I've found pairs well with XX.

I could see the Newminster helping it out. Maybe some Sutliff Virginia Slices too.

Geoff, if you find this tobacco on the strong side I’d recommend stay clear of the Brown version........which is definitely stronger!!
I enjoy both straight with some aging, you can definitely lighten the Black up a bit with any sweet and tangy Virginia.......even a Cavendish works well. Let us know how you now prefer smoking the Black. Good luck

Better avoid the Brown Rope. It's stronger with a high potency. Brown Bogie did not seem as bad

Black XX was a full smoke and very unique taste but that is the first nic hit that affected me in a long time.

Black XX will lay you out if you arent careful. That stuff is strong, and tastes like burned steak and creosote. Its an interesting change once in a while, but approach with caution!

I may use it sparingly in blending experiments
