Any Penzance smokers here? Do you cellar it? I have a lb put away. Thinking about opening one bag that has a year of age on it.

I love it..I'm not sure that keeping it for a long time helps though.I kept some back for 5 years.I didn't see much difference.I've had some put back for 3 years now.I'll break it out next summer.I don't smoke it in the house.Wife can't stand the smell.

Never had the pleasure, but I do note Jim partaking in some 12 year old sometimes I got that in a trade with a fellow member. It's a little smoother and the latakia has slightly mellowed, but still packs a nice flavor punch. Penzance doesn't really need aging time, but with a few years, does become a little more well rounded. I say Don should open the bag and enjoy.

The only reason I can think of to cellar any is it can be hard to find unless one wants to pay $125 for an 8 oz bag on EBay or has a trusty B&M source. I love the stuff and currently have an 8 oz bag open under glass, an additional pound and a few more tins in the cellar; however, it's not there to age. I just won't be chasing it anymore. G.L. Pease Quiet Nights punches all those same buttons for me, is readily available, less expensive and I've stocked up on that one. I also have quite a bit of Esoterica Margate plus An So to Bed put away too, both of which have been more readily available recently than Penzance; consequently, unless more Penzance just happens to fall in my lap I'll continue to open what I have on hand now sparingly over the next ten years or so.
For what it's worth, some say Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding tickles that same fancy as Penzance for them. Although I didn't get that same comparison, it's definitely high quality tobacco and has a substantial following. One flying under the radar you might also like if Penzance is your thing is Hearth and Home Ten to Midnight. It doesn't necessarily dance all over my tongue like Penzance but I found it a worthy substitute in a meerschaum that's easy to obtain and can be had for a song compared to some others.
After all that blabbering, I'm with Jim, say crack it and enjoy.

Penzance is a very fine blend but I won't join the frenzy to chase it down like some folks do. Open it and smoke it is my 2 cents. After all, it is why you bought it.

G'eve, I thought I would try some penzance, only to discover it is not available in the UK , so I ordered some Special Latakia, & stuff instead , I do not think it will arrive before Xmas though, I think it will be worth waiting for, what do you guys think of the Special Latakia compared to Penzance ? I had a quick browse of the reviews, including Jim's , thanks to Jim again, bye. PS. Treated myself to some 123 mixture, & some Montecristo & Romeo & Julieta mini cigars as well, it is Xmas guys...

I have smoked Penzance before, just not any that wasn't right out of a tin. The first bag I bought was to smoke, but I just didn't get to it this year. Bought another bag from my B&M when I saw they still had some. Only cost me $37 per bag. Now I guess I have a nice supply to enjoy for a few years. I have been smoking a lot less of everything lately due to health issues, so I may leave these unopened for a while longer yet. I have open tins of other blends to kill first.

I greatly enjoy Mac Baren Special Latakia Flake Stan, good stuff. It's a stand alone for me, nothing else quite like it, so I couldn't really compare it to Penzance except to say it's like coffee and tea. I love either when the mood hits me.

Hi, thinks for the tip I will have try Mac Baren & compare it the Germain's Special Flake, Penzance iis unobtainable, as for me I love tea & coffee too, on a good day I grind some coffee beans or prepare some Kyoto Golden Temple green tea I was gifted with,or freshspring KKong dragon tea, but these days it is instant coffee & an instant teabag, either way I am thankful, See Ya.

Hi Jim, in the context of Germains Penzance, I meant Germains Special Latakia flake, but Dan has given me another to try Mac Barens HH Latakia Flake, I will try & compare them to the reviews of the masters, all three are new to me, which do you favour over the three , Jim ? Another virtual pal, compared Penzance to Special Latakia flake, to paraphrase, as both distinctively Germains Latakia blend, of mild yet not notably distinctive in the way you praise Strang, but I like some of the new German blends too, such as Hans exciting products, and his Balkans Passion is a notable blend, I will search to see the reviews... PS, as to Strang I have only tried some GH rope & pigtails, which I am still appraising in my slow way, but when I tried to order some Strang unfortunately I had a hitch , of some kind, I may try again, especially until Hans has a new retailer. PPS I remember well my hike through the Balkans of Old Yugoslavia on the way to Athens in my student years, one of my few travel pilgrimages, the Illyrian Dalmatian mountains & islands , centred around Split & Dubrovnik are on the pure Adriatic sea the frontier of Rome after the fall of Constantinople , the fading of Illyria....of old ( in the 70"s) well worth a pilgrimage, especially to the Greek fraternities...

I get asked every so often which I prefer between SLF and Penzance, and it's hard to answer because I really like both of them. If pressed, I guess Penzance wins by a hair for my personal taste. I like HH Latakia Flake quite a bit as well, but its flavor profile is mildly different than the other two, so I would not say it was an even equivalent to the other two. But, it's a four star blend just the same.
Btw, Motzek sells Strang, not Hans. If you like Balkan Passion, take a look at Zulu, which is really a superior English blend.

Hi, thanks, it was Motzek I had a German translation blip with , I meant Hans was the only German supplier that I have had direct dealings with, but Hans was a pleasure to do business with , my German skills are limited , & so I was pleased when Hans was so obliging to deal with International customers, before his retail shop is closed this winter. But maybe I will persevere with Motzek, excuse me I am being obscure in my brief allusions. I presume perhaps I am on the same wavelength with everyone but forget that we are an international forum, so I should be more clear perhaps, but I tend to get more poetic than prosaic, but needs must, but most posts are very brief & cryptic in a Twitter like Zen haiku way if that is not to fanciful, but excuse me I am being poetic and obscure rather than plain factual again.;-) I am trying to get my footing in my ways amongst the sophisticated & sometimes varied reviews, of different & diverse tastes, Strang seems a sophisticated balance of Virginia , Burley & Perique amongst the various blends of Virginia & Perique or Virginia & Latakia or Virginia & Burley, but in my limited experience the straight Virginia's of GH' s Irish Twist & Pigtails must take some beating . But I look forward to more of your recommended blends, particularly Motzek Strang, & Hans Directors cut, when I can find some. Bye.

I like both but Germain's SLF is pretty hard for me to get and I won't be chasing that one anymore either. I have one tin on hand. I'm well stocked on the HH Latakia Flake version though which should be sufficient for quite some time.

Well, I said I would not chase Penzance but sometimes it just comes your way. I got a call from my B&M yesterday and they got a few tins in. So, I asked them to put 2 tins aside for me and I'll pick them up today. Santa came through on this one.

A few years ago, Ron was kind enough to sell me 6 bags of Penzance that he had in the back along with whatever tins he had. I jarred up 1 bag, still have 5 left. I've been on a John Cotton kick lately, so really havent had opportunity to dive into the Penzance.

I am so far out of league to even talk about this blend so I will just watch the discussion and try to make heads or tasils of this HOLY GRAIL tobacco!

G'day sir , some say the pen is mightier than the sword, I have never yet been to Penzance, but I have camped nearby as a guest of mates as a schoolkids, but as I posted on another forum, My Bruno pipe says, to smoke the pipe , master the tongue. 😇 peace of the pen bro's & Sisses, with Our Grace's permission... PS, enjoy whatever you are smoking , that is the best smoke.
