About 15 years ago PayPal and Ebay had a policy against selling tobacco. I listed a collectable cigar box (Opus X) on Ebay and PayPal banned me.
I have contacted PayPal repeatedly asking that they cancel my account. They responded "Log into your account and cancel the account" to which I responded "I can't log in, you have banned me" to which they replied "We can't cancel it for you, you will have to log into your account and cancel the account".
Does anyone know how to deal with these idiots?

I think you have to get un-banned or you're screwed. If you're emailing them, I would switch to phoning them to get better support, and not telling them you want to get un-banned to cancel your account, but because you want to use the great and magnificent PayPal again. It was so your fault, you're sorry, please unban me. You may have to get to a certain level of support guys that have the power, or deliberately call the wrong department who isn't used to fielding questions like yours all day.
If that doesn't work, maybe taking to twitter and making some noise. Use their name so they might notice you.
If that doesn't work, maybe try an actual letter (it's a thing you write on paper with a pen and ship to them, it's called mailing).
Maybe contact their PR people or seeing if you can figure out the CEO's email from other folks' emails.
Yes, I'm saying it will be a lot of work and headache, and you're probably already screwed. Sorry man. Maybe someone will know something I don't.

I have done without it for about 15 years and it's not a problem, plus I generally like to support people and companies who try. I don't like to support idiots so maybe I will just let it go

Just start a new account. I have around 5 Ebay accounts and 4 different Paypal accounts for different hobbies that I'm involved in and for my business.

I would agree that is probably the best approach for your situation. If your phone service is out, please call 875-8833 to report the issue! Grr, sorry

Just start a new account. That's what I would do. Your account was probably inactive and deleted years ago. I've sold thousands of dollars of tobacco through eBay/PayPal. I've had listings deleted several times. I reword the listings and Bob's your Uncle! I've been very impressed with PayPal's (off shore) customer service.
