I love tinkering and making things better than they were. It's a curse! If I sell any pipes, to make sure I don't mis-state anything, I'm curious what levels of clean up there are on pipes and what a "full restoration" entails?
I typically do a great deal of research before I do any more than a wipe down to make sure I don't screw up and I typically end up doing all of the below as needed.
Cake removal Rim clean up
Tar removal Salt and alcohol or cotton balls and alcohol Stem polishing Stummel cleaning and buff/polish

There are many videos on YouTube from cleaning your tobacco pipes to full restorations. I’ve also learned plenty from rebornpipes.com ......extremely informative reading and videos. Have fun 👌👍👍

As a pipe collector when I see "full restoration" or "fully restored" I read it as anything goes including boring and recoating, topping and restaining.

I have to agree with Dave, fully restored and the other certainly could mean that the pipe or pipes were in pretty worn or bad condition needing a restoration and ultimately lowers any expectations of it being in original condition.

I know that when you send off a pipe for a good cleaning to some of the pro's...the stems come back looking great, but the ghost of the oxidized stem comes back in short order.
When you do a restoration, the stem comes back great and continues to look great with little maintenance.

What does topping entail? Slicing a bit of the top of the bowl is my guess.

What does topping entail? Slicing a bit of the top of the bowl is my guess. My method is to lay a sheet of sandpaper on a flat surface (breadboard) and apply pressure while holding and sanding in concentric circles, checking periodically for evenness and height.
