I have a question for the long-time pipers. My grandfather and great-grandfather lived until they were 90. My dad is 80 and in great health. I'm 56 and I smoke about 25 bowls or about 3oz a week. I do not have years of pipe smoking under my belt. Planning to live until about 90 I have figure around 34 years left. That would mean I need about 335 LBS in my cellar.
I question if I will still smoke 25 bowls a week. Do you find yourself smoking more or less as you get older?
I'm trying to determine the size I need to make my cellar.

I find that I am smoking less, but it may be temporary. Or not.

(1) Buy as much tobacco as you can afford (2) Change your will that your cellar is willed to the Patch for use in raffles for the site's upkeep (3) Patch survives for eternity

I have 12 pounds. In the unlikely case I ever run out, I will just quit.

In the retirement years, depending on your overall health, I find that I smoke slightly more than I did when I was working. That is because I just enjoy sitting on my butt enjoying the smoke that I have going...if you decide to work on the side, then that will also influence your smoking habits.

I tend to smoke less than I used to simply because moving the body around is becoming more and more difficult. Be that as it may, smoking my pipes is one of the few pleasures I can still enjoy.

I do not even know how much I really have. I surely need to add it up and do some math myself. According the the woman, it's way too much already, but math is not her strong suit.

Since I retired I’m definitely smoking my pipes much more often, 12 to 20 Pipes a day depending if I’m able to get some sleep.

I smoke about 6 bowls a day and am obsessed with getting more tobacco. I think it’s in the pipers blood to want more than he can smoke in a lifetime. At night I dream about my next tobacco accusation. Get as much as you can and stand over your stash rubbing your hands together greedily laughing at all those who put it off before the government took our rights away.

Retired early. About six months into resuming smoking, I was over 12 bowls a day. Now it's 3-5. I don't see myself smoking much more than that as I age.

Hard for me to say, some days I smoke 3 bowls, some days none...but I enjoy SNUS and Snuff...I am a three cellar feller.

Whether your smoking rate increases or decreases over time, your tastes may drift quite a lot.
Twenty years hence, what good will it do you to have 200+ lbs of stuff that you mostly don't care about anymore?
I have many pounds of tobacco in my closet, but it's because I buy a few extra tins from time to time to buffer against the recent drought of ... well... everything coming to America.
When my tastes change I don't really mind having 1 or 2 lbs of something I'm less prone to smoke. I'd probably be a bit annoyed if I had 50 lbs of a no-longer-favorite blend!

I did upload a photo of me goofing around with two pipes, and tried to meld it with the stick avatar, but no soap. So, how do you see the second avatar?

Holy crap! I calculated how long my tobacco would last me and all I can say is that if I get 10% of the way toward some of your weekly consumption I will soon run out! Very soon!

I see myself as a 5-10 bowl per week person (you can't kick me out for not qualifying) because I don't smoke every day and I am often active in ways that don't permit pipe smoking. At this pace, I should have enough to last until I die .... or buy more

I think I'll get the 335 lbs put away and hope for the best. If the government doesn't shut the industry down and I don't smoke as much as planned I will have to share it with my brothers on the Patch. Can't take it with me.

I have found that during the last year I am only smoking about half as many bowls as I did in previous years. Haven’t a clue as to why. Next year I may be smoking even less or maybe I will be smoking twice as much as I do now. As to cellaring, I strongly urge you to make variety your goal. Having a great variety guards against having too much of a particular blend should your taste change. A change in taste over a period of time is almost guaranteed. Though more expensive, I would suggest you buy mainly tinned tobacco. Tinned tobacco is much easier to sell or trade should you find a blend, that you stashed away, no longer holds your interest. This isn’t to say you should avoid buying some blends in bulk because some blends like Arango Balkan Supreme are only available in bulk. Again, variety should be your guide.
