This recent batch of pipes I bought off of Craigslist had some nice pipes which were clean and some that were so incredibly gross I can't believe the person could bring it anywhere near their mouth. I honestly believe there is decades of smoking with a pipe cleaner or even a wipe down having never occurred. I don't think I would smoke these and I couldn't sell them unless I knew they were "clean"
Does anyone have any desperate measure fixes for tar so thick in the stem that the 40th pipe cleaner looks just like the first? I just know that there is toxic crap lurking in the nooks and crannies inside those stems.
So much impacted grime on the rusticated exterior that nothing is getting it out of the cracks. Numerous scrubs with Murphy's, numerous scrubs with spittle, and numerous scrubs with alcohol and there is still what looks like mud in every crack. I took one of the cheap ones and dug out the gunk with a dental pick and sure enough it is tar and cake type goo dried in place.

Probably a retort procedure would help remove some of that mess...maybe a retort done several times if needed. There are others here on the forum that will tell you how to do it. I'm too tired at the present moment to give it much thought, sorry...others will chime in shortly.

Everclear (or some other 100% grain alcohol) and a pipe cleaner with rigid bristles.

For the bits, an oxi-clean soak for about 12 hours seems to bring out most of the gunk.

If you really want to go aggressively, bristle cleaners soaked in Everclear will remove the crud a lot faster, if you do not want to approach it that aggressively, get the nylon shank brushes available at Smokingpipes or P&C.
A toothbrush on the exterior will give you more success at cleaning the outside.

A last resort could always be joeman, or someone like joeman, I think.

Check out those bristle brushes I posted in the other thread. They've done a good job on gunk for me.

Inside the stem or the shank? If its in the stem a good soak is all you need. Someone above mentioned oxy clean I think. if its in the shank then you have other options. Drill it out, shank brushes, retort, etc. All have been mentioned.
Not rocket science, just takes time.

If only LOL. I soaked the stemsin oxyclean and still ran dozens of pipe cleaners through pulling out black and brown gunk. I have ordered a retort kit and some metal handle brushes for the stems.

I say send them off to Peteguy with a tub of Captain black Grape for services rendered...tell him to smoke it in his own pipes though.

The pipe retort is a pain in the butt to set up, but it's vastly more effective than salt+alcohol or just pipe cleaners. If you have a really nasty pipe, it's a heck of a step forward.

However, P&C right now is giving you a $20 gift certificate if you buy a tub of it. Must be good stuff if they pay you to smoke it. LOL
