In the latest batch of estates I got these two and I had tons of trouble getting the cake cleaned out of the bowls, and the gunk cleaned out of the stems but I finally got it. I rewaxed them both and they look even better than the below pictures. However! They stink! I read somewhere that burying them in baking soda can take away the smell.
Any thoughts? I assume it can't hurt but you know what happens when we assume!

If we get something bad smelling in the back of the refrigerator and the smell stays even when it is removed, my wife opens a box of baking soda and places it in the fridge. Smell is gone in a day or two. We've done that a number of times and it works every time.

Baking soda worked well for me a few years back on a “ smelly “ Meer. Did you rinse with mild soap and water? Definitely don’t use acetone or even a mild alcohol, can easily be absorbed by the Meer. Have fun 👌👍

I would contact Mike and ask him about how well the ozone treatment works on Meerschaum pipes, I am betting that due to the porosity of that medium, it would do the trick... pretty inexpensive. Any pipe I send him, I add it to the services, and it has worked every time...he does great work. www.walkerpiperepair.com/html/ozone.html

Agree with Charlie on Mike Myers at Walker Pipe Repair. If you're really concerned about the smell and don't want to mess with it yourself, contact Mike for advice. The Ozone machine works extremely well if it can be done with Meerschaum.

I have two ozone generators, one in my man cave to clean out the smoke smell and a commercial one I use for heavy duty odor cleaning. I will contact Mike and see if one of them will work!
Thanks!

For JimInks birthday, we all chipped in to have him put in the ozone generator...Mike is consulting with engineers at Oakridge national labs to see if it would be successful...so far they are not optimistic.

Let the case air out on its own stuff pipe and cover with moist tobacco you don't need in a baggie for a week. Repeat one or two times. Totally cover it.

Can you attribute the smell to either the stem or shank, or is it both? That'd help sleuth out the cause and cure.
For me, I start with very hot tap water and some scrubbing with a mildly abrasive pad.
I never re-wax a meer.

Fill the bowl with damp coffee grounds and leave them in to dry. Water will flush it out, but won't take away the smell soaked into the sepiolite.

Update.
I contacted Mike and he said he would gladly treat my pipes and advised me that his "process" is proprietary which I 100% respect. I decided since I had nothing in these pipes but time, that I would pick the one I liked the least and give it a whirl as ozone can deteriorate certain compounds such as latex. This is the generator that sits right above "my chair" in my mancave and it gets turned on and the door closed with ceiling fans on after I smoke in there. I tied a string to the stummel and positioned the bowl in front of the fan and left the machine on with low concentration for about 18 hours.
Big improvement and no issue, so it is going back up again today and the concentration is being turned up a hair. I put the other meerschaum in a bag of baking soda and will monitor it for a couple weeks.
