It is likely that many of your here grew up in the Cold War, back when spies were fighting the Soviets and the rest of the Warsaw Pact nations. In my youth, I read everything by John Le Carre, Ian Fleming, and all the historical books about the Cold War fought in the shadows. If you had similar interests, I would HIGHLY recommend you check out a British television show from the last 70's, "The Sandbaggers." It is a gritty and unflinching view of the British SIS, and very accurate. The story goes that one episode in season two was too close to the truth, and the British government squashed it.
This is NOT James Bond, but George Smiley's type of crowd with all the political infighting. The entire series is available for free on a free movie site, Tubi.
Here is the first episode (assuming I can get the link to work) for a taste.

Patrick, I remember the series....it was the British M15 “ PLUS “ that stopped the series for “ National Security “ reasons. The head writer, Ian MackIntosh died in a place crash over the Pacific under mysterious circumstances in the third season. There were suggestions that he had a spook background, and the producers felt that they could not find anyone who could keep the series going as well as he. Other writers were brought in to close out the third season, and without MackIntosh's talents, there was no one to wrap up the third season's cliffhanger. So, it became another great series that died way too early.

Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy. My favorite cold war spy thriller ever. Followed by Smiley's People. I preferred the earlier British BBC version as opposed to the later American version . But read the novels several times. It is said that Le Carre had inside knowledge of MI5 and all of his work had strong elements of truth in them.
