This is a typical example of 70% of the pipes in the 24 I bought a couple weeks ago. Although the picture doesn't show it well, that bowl is about 3/8 inch deep and completely clogged with cake. You could have have put a thimble full of tobacco in it.
How in the world could someone use a pipe to that point? I honestly believe this person smoked heavily for 30 years and never, ever, wiped out a bowl or used a pipe cleaner. 8 or more of the pipes still had a pinch or so of tobacco in them, all dried up and stuck to the cake.
Thankfully, the better pipes in the collection were "lightly" smoked!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you...if the pipes that look like that...it may be that they were better smokers than the "better" pipes. Won't know until you get them cleaned up and ready.

Yup, looks like you have some work ahead of you. Once finished, you may find that one to be a great smoker. Someone else thought so.

Will take some time, but look at the pleasure you’ll get once you’ve made that pipe look 95% better and a much better smoker. Some “ real old time pipe smokers “ rarely reamed the bowl. For that matter didn’t even clean the stems much. Makes for a horrible smoke.....JMHO.

This one got the tough love treatment! It is a S. C. Pipes sitter and it was gross inside and out and not very nice briar. Thus far it has been reamed, salt and alcoholed, shank and mortise scrubbed with rotary brushes, steelwooled with alcohol, dried, steelwooled again. It is now drying for the last time and then will get another salt and alcohol and then an extremely dark brown leather dye to hide all the imperfections, polished and smoked!

If I get an old Estate that has some severe marks on the briar I use my Dremel and do a leaf pattern or complete rustication. If you own a Dremel and the pipe is NOT an expensive estate pipe....have some fun....you’ll be pleased with the outcome 👍

I might work it into this pipe!

That's Scrooge...he always has time for his friends. Scrooge is one of a kind, you won't find many like him...and I speak from not only first hand experience, but 75 years of dealing with people.
James is a special kind of person...once you know him, you will always cherish the moments you have with him.

It always makes me wonder why people didn't ream their pipes. They must have been annoyed that they couldn't fit tobacco in their pipes... Maybe when it got to that point they bought a new pipe.

If this thing turns out to smoke well it might be my favorite pipe! Kinda like that kid in school who you just had to feel sorry for
I started trying to carve something to hide the numerous fills and soon realized I would have to fully rusticate it and so I quit and said "looks aren't important"

Not a dam thing wrong with that. Fills only give it a personality. As for the clover "WELL" It's unique.
