Greets, my all-time fav hobby is wargaming. Think painted miniatures, a massive battle on the mat, lots of dice and a good pint of beer with friends. Here's a Mordor Orc from my Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game collection: Shout out if you play or are curious, I'd like to say hello.

Warhammer 40k since 1995 (2nd edition)
The All Father grabbed me by the beard early and told me in no uncertain terms that I would be there....for the end...for the Wolftime!

I would buy miniatures for D&D 1st edition from the late 70s through the eighties, but you couldn't afford the twenty orcs in this room, plus the twelve skellies and ten zombies in that plus, no one even made a berbalang. They were fun to paint and have though.
Spent many years with board wargames too; once we found Squad Leader, there was no reason to play Russian Campaign or Tobruk, until Combat Mission Beyond Overlord came along. There was an Avalon Hill naval game you played on the floor, with speed and turn radius templates, which was ship miniatures, but we were too busy learning all the Squad Leader add-ons.

Thanks for the reply and good to hear you still enjoy Warhammer. My son's first army was Space Wolves -- started them when he was about 11. They are such a blast to convert and paint, and brutal on the field. Now a police officer and pushing 30, he wants to get back into gaming. He has an Eldar army and we also love Warmachine / Hordes and Malifaux.

Yes indeed Sim, things have changed quite a bit. I no longer do RPG's, but it is much easier on the game masters now with pre-painted plastic minis options, tiles for dungeons, etc. You and I were back in the day, old school -- had to pull off everything from scratch ourselves!

Damn straight. I used a whiteboard for D&D, and it worked really well. When they entered a room, I'd draw the room and it's contents top down on the board, when they left, I'd erase it. The mapmaker had to keep up. Worked like a 'fog of war' computer screen.
Plastic minis would work better than the old lead figurines we had to handle!

That is totally old school, drawing maps with a dry erase marker I love it. I had a huge case full of those old lead Ral Partha and Grenadier 28mm fantasy Models man. Sold some for a mint, traded others for hand-crafted terrain. Cheers and thanks for contributing to this thread.

That's a long run -- it is an amazing universe and a riot to play, so much fun. My son started with that army; I have fond memories of us enjoying the hobby together when he was about 12 all the way to 23. Cool thing is after some time off he wants to get back into it. We're starting with Skirmish games like Warcry.

I have a Emperors children army and Iron Warriors for Horus Heresy. I want to build Nurgle daemons again Used to play a tally-man list in fantasy Rip fantasy. I dont care for Age of Sigmar. I want to learn how to use a airbrush so I can take my painting to the next level.

I played DnD, and many Avalon Hill board war games back in the 80's and 90's. M favorite was the strategy game Third Reich. I still have several different editions of that game. Also had several from other publishers. Never got into miniatures, though my sons and nephews all play W40K. Got rid of most of the games, but held on to a few special ones, including the Avalon Hill and Europa series.

I still play Tabletop RPG's though we use a system my friend created, rather than any of the current systems out there.

Let me know if you ever dabble in painting yourself; I'll connect you to forums or FB groups that are always welcoming with advice and tips. Like baccy, the hobby is a pure pleasure and very relaxing.

That 40k sounds like something fun I could do with my son. He's eight , and I think this would be right up his alley. How do I get started?

Between books, models, paints, and tools, that's about what your first Army is going to run you. Beyond that, pick up the Big Rule Book, it will give you the basics, then you will need to choose an army and pick up the appropriate Codex. The BRB runs like $60, I got lucky and found a used copy for $30.

Very few of the ones on Ebay state what edition they are.

Boxes contain enough models to just barely get started, not enough for any kind of competitive play, but those can be found for $95-105, or on Amazon for about $15 cheaper. You can also do digital downloads of all the books on the Games Workshop website.

Most of them places for Magic the Gathering tournaments I'm sure they'd have 40k stuff. I just bought a base paint citadel kit and the first strike box to see if my son will even like the game. I figure if he doesn't love the little tease from the first strike box I absolutely shouldn't spend any more money on it. Haha.

I'm in Fort Smith, we have a few places around here, but they are mostly small. Another cool resource that only runs 8 bucks is the 40k intro magazine. Comes with a single, blue, Space Marine kit attached to the front. If you want a cool sneak peak into all the armies and stuff, that's where I got started.

There are a number of ways to enter the hobby that don't cost an arm and a leg, including some Warhammer themed board games. Those have push-fit models, streamlined rules, use minimal play space, and generally don't take too long to finish. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss a bit of minis gaming for you and your son. I'm happy to share a few thoughts.

Nice work man. I just paint too. Haven't actually played a game, but I'm slowly working on finishing up my AM army for 40k. Some day I'll get some pictures of them...
