I’m sitting here smoking FM Across the pond. And started to wonder if some of you have changed the way you smoke your discontinued or hard to get blends? Example, you used to load your group 10 bowl with MC 5100 2 times a day, but now that your down to your last 10 lbs in the cellar. You only break it out on the 3rd full moon of odd numbered years and put it in your group -2 bowl good for a puff and a half, trying to save it as long as possible? Or is it just “Damn the torpedoes, Full speed ahead”
I am fortunate enough to have a 2nd home. So some of these blends are only there. So when I’m there, I enjoy them in which ever pipe suits the moment. The FM Across the pond as example. I have 5100 at both places, but I don’t use a smaller pipe, or only on special occasions. But when I do go to one of these hard to find or no longer made blends (MC or Dunhill etc) I make sure I have time to sit and enjoy them! Knowing that someday they will be gone. But oh well. There’s others in the cellar!
So, just curious if anyone has changed there ways?

Nope..I just moved on and found others to enjoy...why prolong the agony?? I spend the time finding a few new blends to add to my collecton before those go extinct.

Good question. For me, it's “Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead."

I tend to smoke my more obtainable blends like Stokkebye LNF, Lux Bullseye, twist, Mac B Scottish mixture, Golden extra, OGS, during the week in the truck.
Connor plug, Strang, Mick Mcquaid, on the weekends. That herd is thinner than my McClellands and Mccrainies, small batch, cellar series, by comparison, after a few years they will probably move into that place.
Just about the time I retire, I will have boatloads of blends over 10 years old, so I will probably work through the aged stuff. I currently smoke two bowls per day weekdays, a bowl and a cigar on weekends..as I get older, I will have more time to smoke.
I find myself doing more Snuff and SNUS as time goes on... plenty of that on hand also... both of them can be enjoyed at church, and in non smokers homes.
Variety is indeed the spice of life!

Still smoke what I’m in the mood for, if/when a tobacco I’ve cellared is gone and no longer available I will move on to another tobacco with similar characteristics. The “ only “ tobacco I smoke on special occasions is Motzek Strang, which is unreplaceable........might cry a bit when it’s gone!!

...not really... I am mindful of the situation, but I don't see the point in not enjoying them while they last... "all things must pass away"

Same here...that and I have spread what I have over to Josh...he is a close friend and didn't get the chance to cellar 5100 and other goodies, so I rather gift him some and then we both have something good to smoke...when it is gone, it is gone and time to hit some of the others...don't have a full lifetime ahead of me, so I try to bring some joy where ever I can. That is my motto, and I try to live by it....especially with pipes and tobacco.

Yes. I never was into any of the Dunhill blends, but was a fan and regular smoker of some of the McClelland blends. I smoked Dark Star and 3 Oaks Syrian on a regular basis. I have a fair amount of both left, but have slowed my frequency of smoking those. I was also an occasional Frog Morton smoker. I have enough of that for a couple of decades.

As Walt said, I didnt get the chance to stock up on McClelland's, what I do have, I smoke when the mood strikes. I have 2 sealed tins that will remain that way only because I know they are good and have plenty of others to smoke.
I like the few Dunhill tobaccos I smoked early on. I only stocked up on Nightcap and I'm ok with that. I have 1 pound of Vintage Syrian that is absolutely delicious. Theres 3 jars in my "cellar" and one that I'm smoking out of. Lucky for me, I've lost my taste for Latakia over the past several months, so the Vintage Syrian and Nightcap should last me a while. When my taste for it comes back, I'll smoke em til it's gone and move on.

I ration accordingly what's cellared and in short or unobtainium supply, several relegated to only special occasions..

I ration some things, like the VaPer Three Nuns and Murray's Navy Rolls. The rest gets smoked when I get around to them.

Not many discontinued blends in the UK so I can't really comment. That said, with dunhill, I'll smoke what I've got and move on to something else.

Any blend that was not doing it for me used to get mixed with 5100 and usually finished off. Now those blends either get traded, re-cellared or tossed on the rose bushes. Other than that small change, I just smoke whichever sounds tasty.

I never had 10 pounds of any one tobacco in my cellar. I bought tobacco the old way, as I needed it. Lots of jars, but most of them only contain 8-16 oz or so. When the tobacco is gone, its gone. I reserve those blends for special occasions, visits from other pipe smokers, and really bad days. Thats it.

Pipe smoking just sort of held on a little better in the UK than it did in America, in England particularly, with the mature folks. I'm afraid that as the years go by, more and more blends will disappear, even in the UK. If I didn't move around so much, I would bulk up myself, in light of recent developments.

No change, if I feel like smoking 40th Anniversary or 5100 or any other blend, I fill up a bowl and apply flame.

I sold all mine as the money being offered was worth more to me. Ended up funding a good chunk of my trip to visit friends.

I smoke what I what as the mood strikes when I'm sitting around relaxing. I won't throw an unobtainable in my pipe to go out and mow the lawn.

I keep my mCClleland blends in my “show” cabinet and will not smoke them till hell freezes over. With all the other everyday blends I have I just can’t bring myself to crack something I can no longer replace.

I smoke the available blends almost exclusively, but I have a nice stack of McClellands set aside for retirement. I occasionally add to that stash here and there, but I don't want to miss out on what is easily available now while chasing discontinued blends. Remember, anything available now, may well not be available tomorrow.

Very much a mood smoker. If it tickles my fancy I will pop the tin! Sometimes that mood is when with friends that never had the chance and I'll pop and share.
