I am wanting to play around with changing up my cob pipes. I've seen some with some very pretty freehand stems, different colors and swirl designs. Does anyone know where I can find a place that sells a variety of stems?

All stems need to be at least fitted to a pipe which entails cutting a tenon or at least minor shaping of the tenon. Sadly this can't really be done by just anyone and should be performed by a pipe repairer or maker to get the correct results. You can purchase perform stems from Vermont Freehand link but, as I said they will need fitting.

Maggie, this outfit used to be Briar Works. They offer Forever Stems for cobs. Send them an email and see if they're still taking orders.

Briar Works does not and never has done Forever Stems or any stems at all for corn cobs. Briar Works is a pipe manufacture that produces there own lines of briar pipes plus contracting from some so called artisan makers producing for some just unfinished stummels to fully finished pipes ready for stamping. The company you were thinking of was Walker Briar Works (http://www.walkerbriarworks.com) which used to produce Forever Stems before selling that part of the business to the Morgans at Missouri Meersham which created a separate company known Old Log Cabin Pipe Works. (http://www.oldlogcabinpipeworks.com) which is the new home of the Forever Stem products. Yes it is a good suggestion to try and contact Walkers but I think she will find that they will just tell her to contact Old Log Cabin Pipe Works which is not producing Forever Stems right now so for those wanting to get all custom and crazy with new stems for cobs just might find themselves SOL.

G'Xmas day, I obtained some Mr Brog churchwarden stems on eBay, there are a variety of plastic black stems available, but like you I have searched for acrylic exotic & coloured stems, but without luck, my pipe dream is to make my own, there are videos of professional pipe makers on YouTube demonstrating the making of various types of stem, often using sophisticated lathes & machines, but with patience & practice & some ingenuity I can imagine making various acrylic & wood stems using basic hand tools & Dremel type gear, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say, work in progress, good luck in your search, bye. PS, if the tenon on the stem is of too small a diameter to go in the bowl shank I add tape for a tight fit, if too large filing & sanding should fix it to fit... PPS. I fitted a Mr Brog churchwarden/hobbit stem to my MM Freehand corncob, but careless handling broke the tenon, but it is easily replaced, I have five of these budget stems, they look fine on a MM corncob, & some tape gives them a tight fit.

PS, for a quality pipe like a Dunhill, certainly I would leave it to the professionals to fit tenons etc. , but for a 10 dollar corncob or Kong pipe, as an amateur I am willing to experiment & "bodge" , as my little customisation part of the hobby , but I have some training & experience, so it is not perhaps for complete beginners. Work in progress, so far....

For replacement pipe stems I highly recommend Tim West, www.jhlowe.com/ ... His work is impeccable! Admittedly I have had only custom work done by him, but I imagine he can keep anyone happily married to their favorite pipe, no matter the corn ;-) Give him a call - We all know how it is to become attached to a comfortable pipe, be it a cob (I have eight cobs) or a Peterson ... treat your cob to a 2nd life! Tim is not ultra-fast with the turnaround, but he is just about the best there is - you'll have to send him your pipe for a perfect fit - and just think... a custom amber tortoise shell or bamboo stem for your favorite cob or briar!!! Telephone: 614-761-3465 Tel/Fax Mail: Tim West, Inc. / J. H. Lowe & Co. 1588 Grayling Ct. Columbus, Ohio 43235-5950 USA E-mail & PayPal Account Addresses: info@jhlowe.com order@jhlowe.com
