And not just because of his accomplishments recently but how far he’s come over the past 4 or so years. He’s learned about how to work hard and how to always do the right thing and work hard no matter where you are and who is watching. Last night he told me that he wasn’t sure when he was going to get his new belt (yellow) but he was going to keep trying. He was hoping to do it in 3 months. He goes to the dojo 4 times per week, practices at home and works his tail off. He earned his belt promotion last night, after just 4 weeks of starting training. He also had the flu for one of those weeks and was too weak to train. imgur.com/a/3nMYJyM Our philosophy is: “A Black Belt is a White Belt that refuses to give up”.

So awesome man, congrats to him, and you. You're raising a fine young man. I know you are proud I am very proud Josh. His Sensei tonight took him aside after Weapons class and said “I’m proud of you”, and then turned to me and pointed at me and said “He’s proud of you too, most importantly”.

Success...both his and yours...this is why he is going to grow up to be the kind of man you want him to be. So rare these days both of you have reason to be proud.

Thank you everyone. It’s so nice to see that after dealing with many struggles, he’s got some pep in his step and some confidence in knowing that he can do anything as long as he is willing to work for it.
What else do we pray for for our children?

I am going to go out on a limb, but I suspect proper parenting, a nurturing environment, and accountability has something to do with it.
Regardless, the young man deserves credit...well done!

That's really cool … congrats to him! I can't see the whole sign but assume it's Shorin-Ryu … same style that I studied as a kid. Well, really close anyway … Shuri Ryu and Shotokan.

Wonderful accomplishment. Congratulations to you both. I know what hard work those belts are. I accompanied three sons through Tai Kwan Do from white belt to black belt. It's hard work, hard training, discipline and great accomplishment. It also teaches our young people both self defense and moderation.

Hardly anything surpasses the feeling a man gets when his son makes him proud. Just wait until he gets his Black Belt...

Wax on.... Wax off!
I remember a Chuck Norris interview where he spoke of facing Bruce Lee. Paraphrased:
“It was scary facing him when sparring, you knew you were getting your arse kicked, just to what degree it was going to happen”.

I think it’s a reasonable goal. Scott it’s possible for you son to get his Black Belt within five years. The physical effort will be the easiest of his tasks. It’s the mental focus that will challenge him the most. With your encouragement he WILL achieve success and he will learn self discipline that will benefit him the rest of his life. Don’t let him quit!
