He’s being charged with four counts of vehicular manslaughter and reckless endangerment, plus a few other charges. May he never see the light of day, placed in solitary confinement so he can reflect back and never forget the horrific tragedy he caused. General population is to good for this guy.......JMHO

An incredible tragedy. Loss of life is horrible. If indeed his bakes failed, he will have to carry the knowledge of what he did for the rest of his life.

Based on the demeandor of the cop in the interview I saw, I think there is more to it...even though they ruled out drugs and alcohol, if the cops are immediately charging with vehicular homicide, that isn't a charge they make lightly....but I digress, maybe I was too quick to judge, will have to see this play out. I have just seen to many A-holes with callous disregard...I see Fedex Ground driver routinely blowing through red lights.

They ruled out drugs and alcohol and intention. It was an accident. He is young and didn't have a lot of experience. Let's wait and see.

Being in the collision industry, I see accidents caused by negligence every day of the week. The vast majority of them are now caused by inattentive drivers. My gut instinct tells me he was speeding, texting or playing on his phone, looked up at the last minute and tried to slam on his brakes. I don't know how much weight he was carrying on the flatbed, but the tractor could easily have weighed 12 tons. That's a lot of weight to take from 70 mph (or more, if you have ever drove in Denver) to 0. I am sure his brakes did fail or had brake fade (which inexperienced drivers wrongly interpret as brake failure). They failed to stop the truck in time. He is now responsible for the deaths of four people, multiple injuries and probably a million dollars in road and bridge damage.

The video shows him swerving for a half mile or so. Trying to get control on a down hill curve.

I'm curious to know the details of "why?" and "how?". Despite that, a very sad, sad story. With that said, I also have to post this...

I’m not familiar with that highway, need to ask, could he have drove off the road and only killed himself. The reason I ask this I was carrying a load to Corpus Christi, dropped it off, felt a terrible pain in my ches, knew what it was, heart problems, took the coastal long route and practiced quickly shutting my truck down, coastal route, less traffic, didn’t want to hurt anyone with my truck if I passed out. Finally got home, went to hospital and had 2 stents put in.

This sounds like an accident. Mechanical failure, downhill, no brakes, young driver. Tragic but not criminal.

CDL drivers are required to check their rigs before they begin a trip that includes the brakes. Freight companies use the cheapest parts on the planet lots of will fit stuff. I doubt a 23 year old has the skills to operate a class 8 rig.

I have driven millions of miles without a chargeable accident... proper pretrips and brake checks during a run are mandatory. Commercial carriers are required to have periodic comprehensive inspections and are subject to unannounced audits by federal and state DOT inspectors. Pretty much all modern trucks are provided with jake brakes that take a lot of the load off of the braking system. A recent follow up story said that he came upon an accident and closed his eyes when he thought he was going to die as he collided with the traffic.
When you factor in all of that, I can’t comprehend how this occurred... I have had some hairy assed situations during my career and I cannot understand how this happened. He has a green card to drive a truck, and I cannot help but wonder if he was ever fit to drive. I say this having seen Mexican drivers doing some boneheaded moves while driving on American soil... a couple years ago, I saw one ignore the miles of cones, flashing lights, drive a couple hundred yards on a fresh asphalt mat and almost killing workers on a lay down machine.
That is what led me to make my initial post.
Mexican licensing is not up to US standards, and I doubt that penalties for infractions are handled the same way either.

That may be true for a fly by night outfit, but not for ones that are responsible... all of our trucks are outfitted with premium parts, and the company is self insured... too much skin in the game to cut corners. We recently deadlined 500 trailers that had small cracks at the towing assembly on Stoughton trailers that have been a royal PITA from for us to operate at the capacity needed to accommodate the shippers.... no corners cut, no exceptions.

Talking Fedup and UPSS cheap brake drums, unknown brake linings, knock off air valves, mystery air lines. After selling the stuff for 30 years I wont get behind a truck or in front of a truck or beside a truck. Busses are worse. He probably had a US license earn your CDL in as little as three weeks claims Swift and the roads are full of these drivers. There are also many professional drivers with over a million accident free miles at places like ABF, Yellow and many others.
